He is considered one of the greatest and most influential composers of his time and of all time, and his works form an essential part of the standard concert repertoire. Bach is credited with being largely responsible for the development of the sonata form in the Baroque era. He created several new forms of writing, such as the sinfonia and the prelude, which became popular in the Baroque. Bach also regularly combined two or three voice parts in the form of canons or fugues. His forms were complex and innovative and helped to establish the sonata as a form of composition. English • German.Certainly the famous Méditation over the first prelude from Bach’s Well-tempered Clavichord – with the subsequent addition of the words to Ave Maria – has become Charles Gounod’s best-known piece. In the 19th Century, however, one of his other compositions was also very popular: Hymne à Sainte Cécile, a ‘Méditation religieuse’ – in the original version with orchestra (1865) dedicated to his friend Jean Delphin Alard. Gounod had already written one work in honour of the Blessed Cecilia, patron saint of church music, a Mass that became very popular. In contrast, this Hymne is instrumental, with the violin ‘singing’ a lovely melody over a harp-like accompaniment of arpeggios. (Gounod subsequently wrote another setting with the text ‘Ave verum’.) Plate no. 19323, published in 1868.

English • German.In days when there was no opportunity to get to know music better by repeated listening with a radio or CD, playing through it oneself after hearing a piece at a concert was the only option. This explains the proliferation of fantasias, paraphrase settings and arrangements of popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century: these were a regular feature of musical life, both in the concert hall and in households. The popularity of Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet, which stood at the top of the list of most popular works, is entirely understandable: the catchy and exotic character of the music was captivating. Reinhardt undertook a series of operatic adaptations for Schott publishers including this March from Carmen, which brings together a few of those rousing melodies in a little medley. Plate no. 02523, published in about 1913.

English • German.The same procedure was followed by Berthold Tours, who worked melodies from the fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck into a colourful Fantasy featuring tunes such as “Ein Männlein steht im Walde†(‘A man stands in the forest’) or the “Knusperwalzer†(‘Gingerbread Waltz’). Tours was a Dutch-English violinist, composer and editor who studied at conservatoires in Brussels and Leipzig. After spending some time in Russia, he moved to London in 1861 and remained here for the rest of his life. In London he worked as a violinist, violin teacher, organist and composer – and latterly also in a music publishing house. His work as a composer is broad in scope. This Humperdinck Fantasy is an imaginative example of the virtually endless supply of variations composed on popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century. Plate no. 25821, published in 189.

English • German.This Sérénade op. 29 by Auguste Faucheux may also be counted as salon music. Little is known about this violin and viola player from the French city of Lille who also worked in Paris from 1844-1852 as an orchestral violinist at the Opéra comique. His name was listed in 1841 as a member of a string quartet. As in the case with Alard, surviving compositions by Faucheux include arrangements of operatic melodies popular at that time and entertaining pieces for musical salon evenings. Of those pieces published by Schott we have chosen this lively Sérénade, which flashes nimbly by in the style of a Tarantella. Plate no. 21966, published in 1875.

Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.799603). This is my own arrangement of one of my favorite Chopin waltzes for the piano. As the Duo del Mare, violinist Amy Schlicher and I performed this arrangement aboard the ms Zaandam cruise liner, where it proved very popular. Because Amy and I did not have extra time or venues in which to rehearse, I intentionally made this arrangement very accessible (so that we could play it well without rehearsal or an intermediate-level duo could master it with some practice). This waltz would make a great encore or showpiece on your next program.About the Arranger:Praised as a sensitive pianist and outstanding accompanist who delivers powerful interpretations, Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile pianist, composer, and scholar currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques. Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin. Notable recent engagements include the 2016 and 2017 National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competitions (multiple entrants); the Opera Night at North benefit concert with students of IU's top-ranked opera program (among them Accidental Tenor Andrew Lunsford); and two long-term cruise ship performing contracts with violinist Amy Schlicher as the Duo del Mare.When not working on one of her many concurrent musical projects, Nicole might be found maintaining The Collaborative Pianists’ Community on Facebook, cuddling the nearest dog, looking for opportunities to maintain her Spanish and Italian language skills, and raising and releasing monarch butterflies. His 36 Capricci (Études) op. 3 are a standard work in the violin repertoire: this piece is No. 14 from that collection and a piano part has been added by Ippolito Ragghianti under the title In Memoriam. English • German.Another piece in Spanish style is the Capricho espagñol by Hubert Léonard. Like Charles de Bériot, Léonard was a Belgian violinist, composer and violin teacher. He began his studies at the Conservatoire in Brussels, moved to Paris to pursue further studies, played in various orchestras and toured all over Europe as a virtuoso performer. For a year he taught at the Royal Academy in Brussels, taking over from Bériot, but later returned to the French capital as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher and composer. Compositions by Léonard, who was a friend of Henri Vieuxtemps, include genres popular in his day: music for concert performance, tuition material and ‘delicacies’ to play at musical salons. Among them is Capricho espagñol, an effective little virtuoso showpiece dedicated to Léonard’s violin student Luis Sambucetti from Uruguay. Plate no. 24568, published in 1888.

English • German.On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the German performing rights society GEMA in 2003 La Paloma von Sebastián de Yradier was chosen as the ‘song of the century’. The Spanish composer began his career as an organist and then taught singing in Madrid before moving to Paris. In 1857 he travelled to the Caribbean, developing an interest in the Habañera form and Creole music. Drawing inspiration from this experience he composed numerous pieces with Spanish influence which were published individually by Schott in 1870 in the series Fleurs d’Espagne, 2me collection. Of these, only No. 14 has survived: The Dove (in Spanish La Paloma) is possibly the most often played, arranged and recorded piece of all time. Otto Langey added a pretty introduction to his arrangement for violin (1890). It is a popular piece for domestic music-making. More recent recordings featuring Hans Albers, Freddy Quinn, Elvis Presley and many others, have made this Spanish serenade with its typical Habañera accompaniment famous, and it can readily be played at home, too. Edition based on plate no. 02567, first published in 1890 as plate no. 24490.
