After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. English • German.The same procedure was followed by Berthold Tours, who worked melodies from the fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck into a colourful Fantasy featuring tunes such as “Ein Männlein steht im Walde†(‘A man stands in the forest’) or the “Knusperwalzer†(‘Gingerbread Waltz’). Tours was a Dutch-English violinist, composer and editor who studied at conservatoires in Brussels and Leipzig. After spending some time in Russia, he moved to London in 1861 and remained here for the rest of his life. In London he worked as a violinist, violin teacher, organist and composer – and latterly also in a music publishing house. His work as a composer is broad in scope. This Humperdinck Fantasy is an imaginative example of the virtually endless supply of variations composed on popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century. Plate no. 25821, published in 189.

English • German.Belgian violin virtuoso Charles de Bériot was not only a celebrated soloist, but also a highly respected teacher: he ranks as the founder of the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing and as one of the masters of violin teaching in the 19th Century. His compatriot Henri Vieuxtemps was perhaps his best-known pupil. Besides his Violin Method, his most significant contribution to the violin repertoire was his ‘Scène de Ballet’ and ten violin concertos. Born in 1873, Ethel Barns studied at the Watford School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London before becoming famous as a violinist-composer. During her career Barns composed over 120 works comprising orchestral, chamber and vocal music; to date her music has been performed at the Proms twenty times and a large number of her works were published by houses such as Schott, Elkin and Carl Fischer. Although at the time several women had become famous as performers, it was rare for them to be recognised as composers. Barns died in 1948 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London. Valse - Caprice is a 5 minute, advance standard work for violin and piano which would be an ideal recital work or encore for high level student and professional performers. It was first published by Robert Cocks & Co. in 1894 and later published by Schott.

English • German.French pianist Jean-Henri Ravina was a child prodigy who came to public attention when he performed in a concert at the age of eight. The violinist Pierre Rode heard him and encouraged Ravina to go to Paris, where at the age of thirteen he became a student at the Conservatoire. After completing his own studies, Ravina was eventually to teach there, too; he gave up that position, however, to focus on his career as a virtuoso performer and composer. Concert tours to Russia and Spain secured the reputation of this pianist, who was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1861. Ravina wrote almost exclusively for the piano: Études, Préludes, a piano concerto, a Rêverie for the left hand alone, compositions for piano duet – including transcriptions of all Beethoven’s Symphonies – and piano pieces for three and as many as six players. The stylistic influence of Rode and Chopin is evident here. Ravina’s Petit Boléro op. 62 reflects the nineteenth-century predilection for exoticism and for music from other cultures – in this case from neighbouring Spain. Ernst W. Ritter, who published numerous arrangements with Schott, also arranged this composition for violin and piano: it is a dashing, lively piece of music! Edition based on plate nos. 02372 (piano part) and 02371 (violin part), first published in 1887 as plate no. 24483.

Little is known about this violin and viola player from the French city of Lille who also worked in Paris from 1844-1852 as an orchestral violinist at the Opéra comique. His name was listed in 1841 as a member of a string quartet. This explains the proliferation of fantasias, paraphrase settings and arrangements of popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century: these were a regular feature of musical life, both in the concert hall and in households. The popularity of Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet, which stood at the top of the list of most popular works, is entirely understandable: the catchy and exotic character of the music was captivating. Reinhardt undertook a series of operatic adaptations for Schott publishers including this March from Carmen, which brings together a few of those rousing melodies in a little medley. This Polish composer, who later took on French nationality, devoted particular attention to smaller forms such as the Ballade, Waltz, Impromptu, Berceuse and created an enduring musical tribute to the dances of his native Poland, including the Polonaise, Mazurka and Krakowiak. With few chamber works by Chopin written for string instruments, it is hardly surprising that arrangers such as Friedrich Hermann chose to make his music available for violin with piano accompaniment such as this setting of the Mazurka in Bb major, a stately dance with resolute opening and characteristic dotted notes on the first beat of the 3/4 bar. Educated in Moscow, this child prodigy gave his first public performance at the age of nine and then embarked on his first foreign tour. He travelled to Paris, where he met Franz Liszt, who offered advice and encouragement. International appearances made Rubinstein increasingly well-known both as a pianist and composer. His musical legacy is vast, encompassing stage works, chamber music and symphonic works, vocal pieces and piano music. His Romance, originally for piano solo, comes from the collection Kamennoi-ostrow (‘Rocky Islands’) with the subtitle ‘Album of portraits for piano’, op. 10 dating from 1854. Like his more famous Melody in F, this Romance is a charming character piece. Edition based on plate nos. 02382 (piano part) and 02381 (violin part), first published in 1896 as plate no. 25957.

English • German.Hungarian composer and violinist Jenö Hubay, born Eugen Huber, received his musical training in Budapest and made his concert début with Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 22 in A minor. He spent three years in Berlin, where he studied violin with Joseph Joachim. After his return he met Franz Liszt, who recommended that he travel to Paris. In that city he was a welcome guest at musical salons; he also formed a friendship with Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay taught groups of violin students first in Brussels, then for a long time in Budapest. For twenty-five years he toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist, settling in Switzerland for a while before returning to Budapest for the rest of his life. His chamber compositions include a series of little pieces very probably written for his own use at musical salons, along with character pieces reminiscent of his Hungarian homeland and exotic pieces such as Plaintes arabes (Arabian Lament), an expressive and mournful lament on the violin.
