The most basic pattern of the Psalm of Lament is the complaint followed by a statement of confidence. The Psalm of Lament progresses from the pain, doubt, and confusion caused by problems and suffering to a statement of belief that God knows and understands and will act for the good of the psalmist. This statement of confidence is not given after God has rescued, but while the psalmist is still in crisis. This is what makes the words a Psalm and not faithless murmurings that God condemns.♫ The opening words of the Psalm, “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son,†(NASB) are actually the first verse of the Psalm 3 in the Hebrew Bible, not merely an editorial comment by a current scholar. Borrowing from the idea of Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition', this suite was composed in response to a selection of those paintings as follows:Shoalhaven River Afternoon (Arthur Boyd); Summer Storm (Emily Kngwarreye); E.U.R. 1 (Jeffrey Smart); The Crow Trap (Russell Drysdale); Easter Show (Sidney Nolan); Grace (Hilda Rix Nicholas); King Sun and the Hunter (John Olsen) and Summer at Carcour (Brett Whiteley). The Suite was premiered at the concert, with the composer (violin) accompanied by pianist Peter Guy (piano).
