Among these songs are a meditative version of the Irish tune Blind Mary, a fiery rendition of Drowsy Maggie, as well as folk-inspired Country Dances. The arrangements range from expressive and plaintive to spirited and triumphant. In terms of difficulty, most of the arrangements move at a brisk pace and are suitable for advanced players.  For piano, this involves fast-moving and leaping chords in both hands, contrary moving scales, and arpeggiation. For violin, this involves double-stops, scales, awkward rhythmic patterns.

The Library was featuring piano in the year’s programming and requested O’Connor compose utilizing the instrument. The premier was broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and was also the centerpiece for a nationally broadcast public radio special, America’s Fiddler, Mark O’Connor at the Library Of Congress. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. The Sonata begins with Introduction and features a melodic and romantic theme with beautiful chords. Hoedown, in D minor, is very lively and tuneful. The Waltz is a lovely theme that undergoes some insightful development. The finale, Gigue, is a 6/8 dance which is quite a romp and features some fast bow work on a very catchy tune. The two of them had recorded on many albums as session musicians in Nashville together, but this is the only duet they ever played together during that time. It is one of those pieces by O’Connor that sticks with you after one listens to it. The music has a unique combination of classical/popular and gospel overtones that gives an irresistible and haunting quality to the tune. Duration – about 8 minutesThere are three arrangements available;School – for Solo Violin, Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2.  Standard – for Solo Violin, Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.  Violin and piano.   Andante For Solo Violin And Strings was written in July 2018 for Gary Woolf, flautist and conductor of the Banda Di Musica, the youth string orchestra at the music school in Greven / Emsdetten / Saerbeck in Germany.The piece begins with a beautiful, melodic Andante where the melody alternates between the violin solo and the orchestra and giving out a mood of wistful calm. This soon leads into a lively folk-like Moderato Dance section with a great catchy tune and punchy rhythms. These two different sections compliment one another, adding variety and excitement as they repeat themselves half way through so that both melodies get plenty of work-out! The piece would very much suit young players, although amateurs and professionals alike can enjoy it.
