For me, I think that A major is one of the most beautiful keys and when I play, it just sounds soothing and I want to share that with the world. Likewise the language German. People consider the language to sound aggressive but once you learn the language, it sounds beautiful in a strange way, hence the title being Schon.

English • German.Belgian violin virtuoso Charles de Bériot was not only a celebrated soloist, but also a highly respected teacher: he ranks as the founder of the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing and as one of the masters of violin teaching in the 19th Century. His compatriot Henri Vieuxtemps was perhaps his best-known pupil. Besides his Violin Method, his most significant contribution to the violin repertoire was his ‘Scène de Ballet’ and ten violin concertos. Alongside ‘serious’ repertoire he was also fond of salon music, as with this appealing Sérenade op. 124. Plate no. 19176, published in 1867.

English • German.French pianist Jean-Henri Ravina was a child prodigy who came to public attention when he performed in a concert at the age of eight. The violinist Pierre Rode heard him and encouraged Ravina to go to Paris, where at the age of thirteen he became a student at the Conservatoire. After completing his own studies, Ravina was eventually to teach there, too; he gave up that position, however, to focus on his career as a virtuoso performer and composer. Concert tours to Russia and Spain secured the reputation of this pianist, who was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1861. Ravina wrote almost exclusively for the piano: Études, Préludes, a piano concerto, a Rêverie for the left hand alone, compositions for piano duet – including transcriptions of all Beethoven’s Symphonies – and piano pieces for three and as many as six players. The stylistic influence of Rode and Chopin is evident here. Ravina’s Petit Boléro op. 62 reflects the nineteenth-century predilection for exoticism and for music from other cultures – in this case from neighbouring Spain. Ernst W. Ritter, who published numerous arrangements with Schott, also arranged this composition for violin and piano: it is a dashing, lively piece of music! Edition based on plate nos. 02372 (piano part) and 02371 (violin part), first published in 1887 as plate no. 24483.

Little is known about this violin and viola player from the French city of Lille who also worked in Paris from 1844-1852 as an orchestral violinist at the Opéra comique. His name was listed in 1841 as a member of a string quartet. As in the case with Alard, surviving compositions by Faucheux include arrangements of operatic melodies popular at that time and entertaining pieces for musical salon evenings. Of those pieces published by Schott we have chosen this lively Sérénade, which flashes nimbly by in the style of a Tarantella. Plate no. 21966, published in 1875.

This explains the proliferation of fantasias, paraphrase settings and arrangements of popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century: these were a regular feature of musical life, both in the concert hall and in households. The popularity of Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet, which stood at the top of the list of most popular works, is entirely understandable: the catchy and exotic character of the music was captivating. Reinhardt undertook a series of operatic adaptations for Schott publishers including this March from Carmen, which brings together a few of those rousing melodies in a little medley. English • German.On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the German performing rights society GEMA in 2003 La Paloma von Sebastián de Yradier was chosen as the ‘song of the century’. The Spanish composer began his career as an organist and then taught singing in Madrid before moving to Paris. In 1857 he travelled to the Caribbean, developing an interest in the Habañera form and Creole music. Drawing inspiration from this experience he composed numerous pieces with Spanish influence which were published individually by Schott in 1870 in the series Fleurs d’Espagne, 2me collection. Of these, only No. 14 has survived: The Dove (in Spanish La Paloma) is possibly the most often played, arranged and recorded piece of all time. Otto Langey added a pretty introduction to his arrangement for violin (1890). It is a popular piece for domestic music-making. More recent recordings featuring Hans Albers, Freddy Quinn, Elvis Presley and many others, have made this Spanish serenade with its typical Habañera accompaniment famous, and it can readily be played at home, too. Tours was a Dutch-English violinist, composer and editor who studied at conservatoires in Brussels and Leipzig. After spending some time in Russia, he moved to London in 1861 and remained here for the rest of his life. In London he worked as a violinist, violin teacher, organist and composer – and latterly also in a music publishing house. His work as a composer is broad in scope. This Polish composer, who later took on French nationality, devoted particular attention to smaller forms such as the Ballade, Waltz, Impromptu, Berceuse and created an enduring musical tribute to the dances of his native Poland, including the Polonaise, Mazurka and Krakowiak. With few chamber works by Chopin written for string instruments, it is hardly surprising that arrangers such as Friedrich Hermann chose to make his music available for violin with piano accompaniment such as this setting of the Mazurka in Bb major, a stately dance with resolute opening and characteristic dotted notes on the first beat of the 3/4 bar.
