THE FINAL WAVE for Violin & Piano Piano 22 pages / Violin 4 pages Approx. Time: 6:15 On Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2011, I was invited to a special meeting of Bay Area business people. Their purpose was wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that I compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan know they would not be forgotten.I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting that I went home and composed a new piece of music entitled: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. After a favorable response from the group, I began composing another piece for violin and piano entitled: THE FINAL WAVE. In this piece, I tried to paint the horror, destruction, uncertainty and sadness of the disaster while giving hope for a future for the people who witnessed this catastrophic event. Unfortunately, THE FINAL WAVE was never completed as planned back in 2011. However, eleven years later, I completed this memorable piano and violin duet. Even though it’s been many years since that terrible day of March 11, 2011, the music can still convey emotions of melancholy, discord, resilience and compassion for tragic and unforeseeable events of today. This timeless work is dedicated to remember and give hope to all those affected by disasters and catastrophic tragedies. This advanced level of music is clearly notated for piano and violin and can be an extraordinary supplemental selection for recitals and concerts. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. But now God will teach Elijah that He also acts in ordinary, quiet ways, as will his continued ministry♫ 8 Themes were used to create this movement: 1. Ahab (based on Movement 2, theme 3) 2. Jezebel (based on Movement 2 Theme 4 – Atonal) 3. Elijah's Excuses (based on Movement 2 Theme 2 in Dorian Mode) 4. Elijah's Depression (Based on Movement 2 Theme 2 in Dorian Mode) 5. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (based on Movement 1 Theme 1 in Aeolian Mode) 6. Windstorm (Modified Dorian Mode) 7. Earthquake (tritones and clusters) 8. The northern 10 tribes, once faithful to Yahweh were virtually pagan. The prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha were used by God to produce a cluster of miracles that had a special purpose in the life of the nation. ♫ Besides the golden calves made by Jeroboam, the Israelites worshiped Ba’al, the supposed god of thunderstorms and fertility. The worship of Ba’al and his consort Asherah became popular, (not surprising since their representations were pornographic and the temples employed prostitutes of both genders and homosexuals for the use of worshippers.) The miracles of Elijah (involving drought and famine, flour, rain, and lightning mark a contest between Ba’al and Yahweh to show who really controls the seasons, the weather and harvests.♫ The movement is made of 4 themes: 1. Ahab – Polytonal (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian) 2.The Mercy of God (Aeolian Mode) 3. Elijah - Polytonal (G Mixolydian / F Mixolydian) 4. Famine Theme (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian). Carmel is the ultimate contest between Ba’al and Yahweh. From morning until nearly sunset the 450 prophets of Ba’al did everything humanly possible to get Baal to show himself as the god of thunderstorms and fertility as the people of Israel watched. They even cut themselves to add human blood to the animal sacrifice. At twilight, Elijah rebuilt the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice and prayed. Fire from heaven (lightning) not only struck the altar but consumed it completely and evaporated the water that had drenched it. Written in typical passacaglia (theme in the bass line) and Fugue fashion, the theme is presented in the piano. The first variation is a gently modified tune in duple with the accompaniment in triplets. In variation two, the tune is rhythmically altered while the upper accompaniment is presented in a spritely fashion. Variation three, the tune is in a triplet moving nature while the theme is in block harmonization in the accompaniment. Variation four is expressive in an almost cadenza fashion. Finally, the Fugue is in a lively four voice manner, ending with a strong proclamation of the title, itself.

This is my own arrangement of one of my favorite Rachmaninoff pieces, his Etude-Tableau in G minor from the op. 33 set (labeled no. 5 or no. 7 in the set, depending on whom you ask), written in 1911. Suitable for early advanced players, this arrangement is a great addition to your next recital program. The violin part contains numerous parallel sixths, making this a fruitful study in double-stopped 6ths for the high-school or college-age violinist. In addition, the piano accompaniment might also work well on the harp.Both the score and the violin part are included with your purchase. About the Arranger:Praised as a sensitive pianist and outstanding accompanist who delivers powerful interpretations, Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile pianist, composer, and scholar currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques. Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin. The piece has two parts, so unusual for works of this kind. Part I, Andantino ritmico ad lib. - has a very impulsive character. Rhythmic triplet at the piano pass through almost the entire work, thereby recalling the constant movement of the floating ship along the waves. The violin's part is quite virtuoso and requires the performer to keep the rhythm as accurate as possible. Part II, Ad libitum poco rubatissimo - is the desire of the performers for complete freedom. The mastery of all kinds of violin sound techniques, combined with a versatile vibrato and mysterious pauses at the piano, makes this work truly interesting, unusual and intriguing for the listener.
