Romantic in character.Review: ...My dictionary gives three definitions of 'Intermezzo,' also the name of a world premiere for violin and piano, Reiko Nishioka on violin and the composer, Gary Noland, on piano. Included are the words 'light character.' If so, the piece has intercalary intermezzos of its own smoothly segued between sections of sophisticated sobriety-or vice-versa. It's a romantic romp, rhythmically robust yet melodically flirting with the nostalgia of cabaret, minus the sleazy diminution of spilled drinks and smelly ashtrays. Its elegance recalls Elgar, and the serious sides, a synthesis of those strange bedfellows Schubert and Ives. Composers hate it when their music reminds you of someone else's, but writing within a tradition, Noland has incorporated divergent styles that, woven together, work. The piano plays in chordal style most of the time as real accompaniment, with polyphonic ensemble playing not being given special emphasis. The sonata is characterized by melodious cantilenas of the violin, intricate rhythms and almost symphonic tonal eruptions alike. The piece demands great technical skills while actually seeming to be easy to grasp. Mustonen is one of the virtuoso pianists-composers of the younger generation. In his works, he often refers to the history and culture of his home country Finland. He performed the world premiere of his Violin Sonata with the young Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto in London in April 2013.

Beginning with an expressive violin theme in a densely packed, 'Brahms-like' piano setting, the classical four-movement work centres around two capricious and playful movements: Lustig, nicht zu schnell is how the second movement begins, a fugal gem working with all kinds of contrapuntal tricks. This is followed by a scherzo-like, wittily flirting Rasch. The finale begins with a melodically simple tune in an almost folksong-like tone which, by a sequence of character variations, builds to a grand gesture which eventually leads back to the initial cantabile – with the sonata coming to a quiet end. This third movement of her Three Pieces is a spirited polonaise with technical challenges for advancing violinists. These include crisp dotted-rhythm patterns and grace notes, high shifts, rapid cross-string arpeggios, and a short cadenza. Some fingerings have been added to this edition in the process of transposing to the violin. The piano part is even more virtuosic, and takes the lead over the violinist's chordal arpeggios. A good stand-alone recital or encore piece, or can be performed in combination with the first and second movements, Nachtstück (Night Piece) and Träumerei (Dreaming) as a showcase for this under-represented composer.

Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. Review of performance by members of Fear No Music (Inez Voglar, violin; Jeff Payne, piano) on inaugural concert of Cascadia Composers, March, 2009 (Aaron Berenbach, Northwest Reverb): Like an André Rieu opium dream, Noland's waltz slowly emerged from a morass of sound, solidified into a lush, decadent, Viennese waltz before dissolving and reforming again and again. Like Bernstein, Noland made great use of the familiar, in this case the easily recognized waltz form, but made it personal, unique, and extremely interesting in his interpretation. This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe. Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl).The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism. The andante has two repetitive parts in a good way; the second part is longer and going to a broad conclusion. Each part begins quite melodiously from forte to soft piano and continues with broad gestures rhythmically. The music has a lot of broad developments; the music remains harmonious and soft. The loudness often goes from soft to a moderately loud music. Although the beginning of the first part starts with a moderately loud music, at the end it a couple of times suddenly changes from soft piano to a moderately loud music. In contrast, the second part begins with a moderately loud music and immediately changes to soft piano; the same happens in the middle of the second part after which there begins a very good preparation for the concluding notes which are broad. Moreover, although having more soft music, the second part of the andante has also a moderately loud music which prepares for broad concluding notes. This work was especially arranged for Thomas Stumpf and Joanna Kurkowicz and was adapted from the second movement of my Violin Concerto No. 1. The inspiration comes from the melodic shapes and sentiments of the hymns and chants of the Syrian Orthodox Church. Though there is no direct referenceto any particular hymn or chant in that repertoire, it is the formal structure and melodic contour from that tradition that provided inspiration for Hymn; especially in the opening and closing sections. The inner feelings of Hymn reflect on one aspect of the nature of faith, and how one holds on to it in a tumultuous world. This is reflected in the middle section where the piano's jagged rhythms attempt to throw off the steady pulses of the violin. Only faith in one's own inner rhythm can keep the violinist moving steadily forward. -Kareem Roustom.

Melodic riches, competence, reliance on classical traditions and skillful use of new means of expression contributed to the wide popularity of these particular works of the composer. They are included in the curriculum for Belarusian music studies in higher educational institutions of Belarus, as well as firmly entrenched in the concert repertoire of famous musicians both in the Republic of Belarus and abroad: in The Netherlands, England, Germany, Russia and other countries. Published by Jesus Martinez Music (A0.1030742). PROGRAM NOTES: The Spear of Destiny is titled and inspired by the supposed spear that was used to kill Jesus Christ. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine' opened his centres in vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not morn for me; I shall have influenced history more than any other German. Hitler became enamored with the Spear of Destiny, which claimed it called to him. Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. In 1899 Sarasate composed one of his most popular, non-Spanish pieces, 'Introduction & Tarantella' Op. 43, which was published in the following year, even in a version with orchestra accompaniment. The tarantella, a folk dance in 6/8 metre, comes from southern Italy and has developed from dance tunes played in Apulia for people suffering from tarantism. According to popular belief, the bite of a tarantula caused tarantism which was supposed to be cured by wild dancing. Go and try if Sarasate's salon piece really has medicinal properties!
