The northern 10 tribes, once faithful to Yahweh were virtually pagan. The prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha were used by God to produce a cluster of miracles that had a special purpose in the life of the nation. ♫ Besides the golden calves made by Jeroboam, the Israelites worshiped Ba’al, the supposed god of thunderstorms and fertility. The worship of Ba’al and his consort Asherah became popular, (not surprising since their representations were pornographic and the temples employed prostitutes of both genders and homosexuals for the use of worshippers.) The miracles of Elijah (involving drought and famine, flour, rain, and lightning mark a contest between Ba’al and Yahweh to show who really controls the seasons, the weather and harvests.♫ The movement is made of 4 themes: 1. Ahab – Polytonal (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian) 2.The Mercy of God (Aeolian Mode) 3. Elijah - Polytonal (G Mixolydian / F Mixolydian) 4. Famine Theme (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian). In most early printings, no author is listed for the text. The 1848 hymnal The Hesperian Harp attributes the text to Alexander means, a Methodist pastor from Oxford   Most sources attribute the hymn's melody to the 1701 English song The Ballad of Captain Kidd, but the melody predates the Kidd tune, however, possibly by more than a century. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. The Psalm of Lament progresses from the pain, doubt, and confusion caused by problems and suffering to a statement of belief that God knows and understands and will act for the good of the psalmist. This statement of confidence is not given after God has rescued, but while the psalmist is still in crisis. This is what makes the words a Psalm and not faithless murmurings that God condemns.♫ The opening words of the Psalm, “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son,†(NASB) are actually the first verse of the Psalm 3 in the Hebrew Bible, not merely an editorial comment by a current scholar. Carmel is the ultimate contest between Ba’al and Yahweh. From morning until nearly sunset the 450 prophets of Ba’al did everything humanly possible to get Baal to show himself as the god of thunderstorms and fertility as the people of Israel watched. They even cut themselves to add human blood to the animal sacrifice. At twilight, Elijah rebuilt the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice and prayed. Fire from heaven (lightning) not only struck the altar but consumed it completely and evaporated the water that had drenched it. Worship in the OT is a rather noisy affair with instruments, singing, shouting, dancing, and public praise. In the Old Testament, quiet in the Temple of God is an ominous, frightening thing, because God’s judgment is to be pronounced! I Surrender All is paired here with The LORD is in His Holy Temple thinking back to Isaiah 6 where Isaiah’s reaction to encountering the presence of God is surrender to Him. Yielding to God is, not only the prerequisite for avoiding God’s judgment, it is the path to peace and joy.     Without the doublestops of the violin part, the wind parts may not seem very challenging at first sight, but to play a beautiful legato with a full tone at piano and pianissimo (slowly, too) is much harder than it sounds. The phrasing and the intensity of the music is critical to the message of the piece. This name was and is so holy that it is not uttered by Jews lest they violate the 4th Commandment.♫ There is an interesting sequence in the Psalm. Three times we see a progression of high to low, from the heavens to the earth, from the clouds to the insects, from kings to children.
