Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.760523). Waltz in A minor, often designated as No. 19, is a waltz for solo piano composed by Frédéric Chopin. The waltz was written sometime between 1843 and 1848, but was not published until 1860, after the composer's death. The piece shows great sadness, while enclosing some episodes that hint at happiness and hope. The first theme of the piece uses a simple but effective melody, conveying a sad portrait, with decorative ornaments used throughout. The second theme is more interesting and lively, although it still has a certain sadness. About halfway through the piece, there is a modulation into A major, featuring a happy and joyful melody. The piece concludes with the main theme, followed by a short coda. The Level is Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate and the duration is approximately 2.01 minutes. It could be played in any type of recital/concert.

Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.799603). This is my own arrangement of one of my favorite Chopin waltzes for the piano. As the Duo del Mare, violinist Amy Schlicher and I performed this arrangement aboard the ms Zaandam cruise liner, where it proved very popular. Because Amy and I did not have extra time or venues in which to rehearse, I intentionally made this arrangement very accessible (so that we could play it well without rehearsal or an intermediate-level duo could master it with some practice). This waltz would make a great encore or showpiece on your next program.About the Arranger:Praised as a sensitive pianist and outstanding accompanist who delivers powerful interpretations, Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile pianist, composer, and scholar currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques. Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin. Notable recent engagements include the 2016 and 2017 National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competitions (multiple entrants); the Opera Night at North benefit concert with students of IU's top-ranked opera program (among them Accidental Tenor Andrew Lunsford); and two long-term cruise ship performing contracts with violinist Amy Schlicher as the Duo del Mare.When not working on one of her many concurrent musical projects, Nicole might be found maintaining The Collaborative Pianists’ Community on Facebook, cuddling the nearest dog, looking for opportunities to maintain her Spanish and Italian language skills, and raising and releasing monarch butterflies. The Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor, Op. posth., Lento con gran espressione, is a solo piano piece composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1830 and published in 1870. This was also the piece played by Holocaust survivor and famed Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman (the central figure of the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist) during the last live broadcast of Polish radio on September 23, 1939 when Warsaw was besieged by the German army.
This arrangement for Violin with Piano Accompaniment reflects faithfully the original for piano solo.

This Polish composer, who later took on French nationality, devoted particular attention to smaller forms such as the Ballade, Waltz, Impromptu, Berceuse and created an enduring musical tribute to the dances of his native Poland, including the Polonaise, Mazurka and Krakowiak. With few chamber works by Chopin written for string instruments, it is hardly surprising that arrangers such as Friedrich Hermann chose to make his music available for violin with piano accompaniment such as this setting of the Mazurka in Bb major, a stately dance with resolute opening and characteristic dotted notes on the first beat of the 3/4 bar. Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. Apart from works of his own, Sarasate also arranged other works for his own use, such as the two 'Nocturnes' by Frédéric Chopin. To pianists, it may seem like sacrilege to arrange such masterpieces but Sarasate wanted to subscribe some of the most beautiful and most tender melodies to the violin which he saw primarily as a vocal instrument. Or he might have regretted that Chopin had not written any original work for violin and piano – but here's Sarasate's arrangement to make up for this lack.

English • German.French pianist Jean-Henri Ravina was a child prodigy who came to public attention when he performed in a concert at the age of eight. The violinist Pierre Rode heard him and encouraged Ravina to go to Paris, where at the age of thirteen he became a student at the Conservatoire. After completing his own studies, Ravina was eventually to teach there, too; he gave up that position, however, to focus on his career as a virtuoso performer and composer. Concert tours to Russia and Spain secured the reputation of this pianist, who was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1861. Ravina wrote almost exclusively for the piano: Études, Préludes, a piano concerto, a Rêverie for the left hand alone, compositions for piano duet – including transcriptions of all Beethoven’s Symphonies – and piano pieces for three and as many as six players. The stylistic influence of Rode and Chopin is evident here. Ravina’s Petit Boléro op. 62 reflects the nineteenth-century predilection for exoticism and for music from other cultures – in this case from neighbouring Spain. Ernst W. Ritter, who published numerous arrangements with Schott, also arranged this composition for violin and piano: it is a dashing, lively piece of music! Edition based on plate nos. 02372 (piano part) and 02371 (violin part), first published in 1887 as plate no. 24483.
