An arrangement of the Suzuki Book 4 Vivaldi a minor first movement for two violins. The second violin part was improvised out of necessity because I (the teacher) am not proficient at playing the orchestral reduction out of the accompaniment book. This duet stands alone but I have included an optional piano part and an optional cello part (piano LH). This arrangement has been performed very successfully both as a duet and with the optional piano and cello. Honestly? I am not sure if my arrangement is anything like Vivaldi's backup but I hope he'd be flattered. I have a lot of repertoire that I have bastardized with my teacher violin improvs and I will be releasing these as my Do It As a Duet series. I hope you and your students enjoy this piece!

The violinist, conductor and composer Béla Kéler, by his birth name Albert Paul von Kéler, was born at 13th of February 1820 in the house No. 41 at town hall square of the city of Bartfeld (today´s Slovakian name: Bardejov). After his studies of music in LevoÄa, Debrecen and PreÅ¡ov, he obtained the position of first violinist at the „Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The same time he studied harmony, counterpoint and started to compose. Since 1854 he received the position as conductor of the orchestra of Johann Sommer in Berlin, he already used the name Béla Kéler. Later he became leader of the military band under count Mazzuchelli. The last twenty years of his life he spent as leader of the spa-orchestra in Wiesbaden and was devoted on composing. He performed in all European cultural centres, as London, Manchester, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig etc. Still he often and gladly returned to his home city Bartfeld. Kéler has written 27 big waltzes, 27 marches, 20 csárdás, 18 polkas, 15 songs, 13 galops, 12 overtures, a ballet and several „musical paintings, such as the idyllic Carpathians, his first important composition which praises the Slovakian nature. The most frequently played theme of Kéler´s work are the 32 bars from his csárdás Memory of Bartfeld, op. 31, which were used by Johannes Brahms for his Hungarian dance No. 5 in the original notation of the author. Kéler´s music, in the time of its creation, could hold his own with the Vienna masters Joseph Lanner and „king of waltzes Johann Strauss jun. Already in his lifetime his 138 compositions were edited in 12 European countries. His manuscripts now belong in parts to the collection of the Å ariÅ¡ museum at Bardejov. Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano (2012) was written for violinist Warren Davidson and pianist Donna Amato, superb musicians for whose advocacy on behalf of my music I am very grateful. The first movement, Canto, is an extended song that develops through a variety of textures. The second movement, Lamento, is a fierce lament in the tradition of an old Irish caoine. The thirdmovement, Variazioni, is structured as two presentations of the theme surrounding five free variations. The theme serves both as the basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structural template. Each variation also contains material referring back specifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory. The first variation is fast and limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The third variation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifth variation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowly regains its declamatory nature before an intense coda ends the work.

I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

The first one was written back when I was a student at the New England Conservatory of Music. It was my opus 3, The Sensuous Gargoyle (1975). My next one was a four-movement work entitled Tunesmith … An American Beauty Pageant (1993). It was commissioned by the Music Department at Lehigh University and premiered by two of its faculty members, Paul Chou and Paul Salerni. The violin has always been my favorite instrument. I am slated to write another concerto, albeit a chamber one, for the Boston Classical Orchestra and violinist Sharon Roffman for a premiere in the fall of 2013.
