Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. The Sonata begins with Introduction and features a melodic and romantic theme with beautiful chords. Hoedown, in D minor, is very lively and tuneful. The Waltz is a lovely theme that undergoes some insightful development. The finale, Gigue, is a 6/8 dance which is quite a romp and features some fast bow work on a very catchy tune. Nómade is the second movement of Sonatango: a classical sonata in form and tango-ish in character. This is possibly my most performed composition, since: - it is accessible to the audiences - it is technically relatively easy to perform and doesn't require many rehearsals - there are more than 30 versions / arrangements from solo piano over duos and chamber music ensembles to full orchestra. - it can be performed in different occasions ranging from recital to funeral (actually, I performed the organ version of Nomade at my mother's burial). - is a good example of crossover between classical music and popular music. It might be even considered neo-barroque music! Nómade, as the whole Sonatango, is dedicated to my sister MarÃa Mercedes. It was adapted from the middle section of the second movement of an earlier work, The Thresher, Sonata For Strings, which has never yet been played. Writing it for Julia Kiefner gave me the special opportunity to achieve this. He graduated in Ljubljana and studied music in Prague, Vienna (Joseph Marx), Paris (Schola cantorum) and Basel (Felix Weingartner).He spent many years teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, teaching composers such as Nada Ludvig-PeÄar, Zvonimir CigliÄ and Janez MatiÄiÄ whilst serving as a chancellor for a period and was a pianist, conductor, music writer, and director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra based in the country's capital.His style reflected late romanticism with qualities of expressionism and impressionism in his pieces, often with a hyperbolic artistic temperament, juxtaposing the dark against melodic phrases in his music.Å kerjanc was liberal in his attitude to music and multifaceted in his works. Whilst musically diverse, his opus centred on composition, varying from piano miniatures and solos for beginners, and solo and chamber works to full blown concertos and symphonies. Apart from sonatas, he notably composed a cycle of seven nocturnes, which many consider his greatest piano oriented work, and seven orchestral pieces Gazele (Ghazels). He not only composed for the piano but also the violin, the clarinet and the bassoon in 1952. During his life he also wrote for international composers and composed the film scores for a number of films under Yugoslavia.
