This easy arrangement for violin and piano has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the period minuet form of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be freely played by beginning students due to the ease built into the piece in relation to the author's suggested interpretation. Recommended for performance in academic recitals, and public festivals, it also serves as a study of Baroque repertoire. This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

Review of performance by members of Fear No Music (Inez Voglar, violin; Jeff Payne, piano) on inaugural concert of Cascadia Composers, March, 2009 (Aaron Berenbach, Northwest Reverb): Like an André Rieu opium dream, Noland's waltz slowly emerged from a morass of sound, solidified into a lush, decadent, Viennese waltz before dissolving and reforming again and again. Like Bernstein, Noland made great use of the familiar, in this case the easily recognized waltz form, but made it personal, unique, and extremely interesting in his interpretation. Duration: approx 3:15 Medb’s Meditation was written for Kailani Farivar, an advanced, young violinist student, and first performed in August 2020 as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild’s Creativity: Learning through Experience program. Medb (often anglicized as “Maeveâ€) is the Irish Connaught warrior queen who features in a group of legends from ancient Irish literature called the Ulster cycle. This piece is intended to represent a reflective moment for the legendary Irish queen and begins calmly. The serenity is disrupted in the violin as the piece progresses against a piano accompaniment that remains deliberately steady. The more the violinist can exaggerate the increasing freneticism the better. Joseph Hollings (ASCAP) is a composer, arranger and music educator, and has taught music to students of all levels for over twenty five years. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including in London's West End, and have been recorded by the Onyx Brass Quintet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle at King's College London, worked for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and established Really Nearly Records with the ever-imaginative Tim Ten Yen. This is my composition from several movements written by various composer members of the Delian Society to illustrate the novel Le Horla by Guy de Maupassant Details, pdf files and mp3 files of the whole suite can be found at:https://dwsolo.com/le-horla-2012-after-the-novel-by-guy-de-maupassant/ This movement is introduced by the narrator as follows: On the left, down yonder, lies Rouen, populous Rouen with its blue roofs massing under pointed, Gothic towers. Innumerable are they, delicate or broad, dominated by the spire of the cathedral, full of bells which sound through the blue air on fine mornings, sending their sweet and distant iron clang to me, their metallic sounds, now stronger and now weaker, according as the wind is strong or light. The protagonist is still in a happy mood, before the madness of Le Horla descends upon him. The sogetto cavato on the name of Guy de Maupassant, used in all of the compositions, is taken as part of the Dorian scale initially, to be transmogrified halfway through into the major scale, representing the optimistic mood of our anti-hero at the outset as he listens to the cheerful bells of Rouen and thinks all is well with his world. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869204). Program note: This is the third duo for violin and piano in my portfolio. The first one was written back when I was a student at the New England Conservatory of Music. It was my opus 3, The Sensuous Gargoyle (1975). My next one was a four-movement work entitled Tunesmith … An American Beauty Pageant (1993). It was commissioned by the Music Department at Lehigh University and premiered by two of its faculty members, Paul Chou and Paul Salerni. The violin has always been my favorite instrument. I have written twelve string quartets. For the violinist extraordinaire Irina Muresanu I wrote a big violin concerto in 2009, and a Partita for solo violin in 2011. I am slated to write another concerto, albeit a chamber one, for the Boston Classical Orchestra and violinist Sharon Roffman for a premiere in the fall of 2013. Last year I decided to write a third duo for violin and piano. I wanted to do something substantial and grandiose, hence the title Grand Duo, opus 151.
