A Violin Sonata written in 2019, but which sounds more like 1869? There’s a reason for that: apart from the obvious and enjoyable challenge of writing an extended faux-19th century piece, the sonata is dedicated to the memory of my mother who - being a Brahms & Tchaikovsky gal through and through - had little use for music written after 1900. For instance, I remember when I was a lad and my father and I would listen to Stravinsky’s Le Sacre, Mom would always go out for a walk until it blew over. The Sonata has four movements: I. Largo-Moderato (7:10), II. Allegretto (5:00), III. Andante (7:00), IV. Bagatelles. Allegro non troppo (6:00). Total performance time is about 25 to 26 minutes. The audio file accompanying this description gives you a couple of minutes of each movement: most of the exposition of I; the end of the Scherzo and beginning of the Trio (with its curious three-measure phrases) of II; the closing measures of III; and the beginning of IV. (The sonata has been read by professional players and is guaranteed to work, but at this writing it has not been performed or recorded. Therefore the audio file is only a computer playback. Living musicians will be able to make far more sense of it.)

The lyrics to the hymn were written by Horatio Spafford after a series of tragic events in his life, including the death of his son at the tender age of 2 and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. These events culminated in the death of his four daughters after the SS Ville du Havre, a ship that they and their mother were passengers, collided with the Loch Earn, another sea vessel. His wife alone survived, and as Spafford was sailing to meet her, he penned the words as he passed the spot where his daughters succumbed to the sea.

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris.After the death of her mother,Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarriedwith an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, MichelCarré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chieflyknown today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe. This work was written for Paul Viardot, the son of Pauline and a well-known violin virtuoso during La Belle époque.1. Nómade is the second movement of Sonatango: a classical sonata in form and tango-ish in character. This is possibly my most performed composition, since: - it is accessible to the audiences - it is technically relatively easy to perform and doesn't require many rehearsals - there are more than 30 versions / arrangements from solo piano over duos and chamber music ensembles to full orchestra. - it can be performed in different occasions ranging from recital to funeral (actually, I performed the organ version of Nomade at my mother's burial). - is a good example of crossover between classical music and popular music. It might be even considered neo-barroque music! Nómade, as the whole Sonatango, is dedicated to my sister MarÃa Mercedes. This arrangement for Violin and Piano of the increasingly popular northeast Brazilian Christmas lullaby Repousa Tranqüilo TRANQÜILIDADE also entitled Sleep Peacefully, is a beautiful folk tune has been recorded in more than one translation in recent years, sometimes with the Welsh lyric below. This transcription of the entirely public domain tune follows a common practice of moving from minor into major at the midpoint of the tune while also preserving the distinctively Brazilian harmonic quality in the opening verse and throughout. Concert piece for a junior student with some experience. Suitable for use in music schools. Program Note.Ellygie was written in memory of my neighbour in Delft, where I lived for 3 years in the early 2000s. Elly was a woman who combined great strength with grace, warmth and tenderness. She showed a deep and unswerving love for those dear to her, indeed at great cost to herself. Elly sang in a local choir; in addition, she was a rare artistic talent who never complained that her opportunities for self expression were constrained by personal circumstances. Rather, she grasped whatever chances came her way with gusto.The main melody is an adaptation, in the minor, of Au Clair de la Lune. The middle section (marked 'giocoso') has a piano part based on a musical rendering of her daughters' names. One can hear the two little girls laughing and playing while their calm mother Elly (violin) reigns.Elly died at the age of 65 in February 2013.
