Spring was written as part of violinist Krysia Osostowicz and pianist Daniel Tong's 'Beethoven Plus' project, for which a new five-minute work has been commissioned as a companion to each of Beethoven's ten violin sonatas. The idea is to form a bridge from present to past, allowing Beethoven's sonatas to be heard afresh, as radical and provocative as they were 200 years ago. Huw Watkins' Spring is the companion to Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 5 which also bears the title 'Spring', and it will be performed alongside the sonata.

When Ligeti taught composition at the University of Stockholm in the 1960s, he met his famous Swedish fellow composer Hilding Rosenberg (1892-1985). Ligeti wrote this musical greeting on the occasion of Rosenberg's 90th birthday.
The little piece is easy to play, composed in an extremely instrument-related manner and sounds really good. It shows that Ligeti, like Bach, Schumann and Bartok, was able to write easily playable and at the same time tonally convincing music in his personal style. Whether at an audition in a music school class or (as an encore) at a concert, it is impossible to resist the immediate charm of this composition.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741) is regarded as one of the most important Belgian composers of the late Baroque era.

The Allegro in G major was originally a movement from the Harpsichord Suites (Pieces de clavecin, Op. 1, 1730). The arrangement for violin and piano by A.Bent and N.O'Neill in 1910 made the piece very popular, particularly among violinists.

The piece makes demands on the player's left hand with its fast passages and virtuoso ornamentations and requires knowledge of all fingering patterns in first position. Occasionally, it is advisable to use third position to avoid major string changes. The passage work consists mostly of scale excerpts, triads, arpeggiation in thirds and sequences. The greatest challenge to master is the large number of string changes in a fast detache, which requires a flexible bow hand.

This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons.

A major contribution to the modern violin/piano repertory, Alexander Goehr's Suite was written for internationally renowned soloists Pamela Frank and Peter Serkin. It is in 3 movements and last about 14 minutes.
