This tone poem is written in the genre of contemporary classical music and is intended for the concert stage rather than church preludes and offertories. Originally composed for violin and piano, it can be performed on several other instruments. This is the second movement of the tone poem Jeremiah 2 - Lonely City. It represents Jeremiah's reaction to God's judgment that we read in the book of Lamentations. We spend millions of dollars viewing horror movies every year. These films are filled with eerie music that adds inexpressibly to the emotional content of the movie. The music in Jeremiah 2 Lonely City was created to be deliberately chilling. The wrath of God is the most horror filled image I can imagine. Frankly, Jeremiah 2 Lonely City is frankly not easy to listen to. ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.In 1963, the Russian composer Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski (father and grandfather of conductors) orchestrated ten songs by Rachmaninov, including Zdes' khorosho, and there is a later orchestration of this song by Michael Rot. You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions. A post-Modern poem that begins like an innocent Romantic Waltz, and then runs into labyrinths of chromatic adventure.The happy ending comes at a great price, and there is a feeling of loss.The piano part does not have the pedals indicated, every major chord change gets a pedal change. This piece needs a lot of pedal, think of Debussy. Big splashes of tonal color. I think that the piano accompaniment will be very rewarding for ambitious pianists.

Francis Ball Is a composer, violinist, and guitarist who has performed in multiple bands, in collaborations, in orchestras, and solo projects. He has recorded and released ten studio albums with The Unwieldies and The Psyatics. His classical, jazz, romantic, and punk musical influences can be heard in all his contemporary compositions. J. Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas. His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. This is how art moves and breathes, and I’m truly honored to take part. MMY.

This is a catchy, melancholy and very sentimental melody. Sigvaldi Kaldalóns (Stefánsson) (13 January 1881 - 28 July 1946) was an Icelandic composer and doctor. Unlike the avant-garde composers of his day, he wrote in a traditional romantic style and composed many of Iceland's most famous and widely performed songs, many of which are now wrongly assumed to be folk songs. His particular skill was in capturing the spirit of poems in his melodies, making him Iceland's foremost lyric composer.The arrangement written here for violin and piano was based on VÃkingur Ólafsson's beautiful interpretation. Transcription of the Neo-romantic song cycle Thoughts and Images (2012), on poems by the Romanian late-Romantic poet Mihai Eminescu. Generally contemplative, but with humorous or tragic touches, it needs simplicity and reserved emotions in performance, also to let the color chords make an impression. The movements correspond to the following songs: 1. the satirical The Album; 2. the nostalgic Years Have Trailed Past; 3. the contemplative, almost minimalist Stars In the Sky; 4. the hectic I Watch the City - What A Hive; 5. the philosophical Ode (in ancient meter); 6. the appeased Vainly In the Dust of Schooling.
