In 1890, Debussy sold five piano pieces of which some may have been composed much earlier. These pieces were: ‘Rêverie’, ‘Ballade Slave’, ‘Tarentelle Styrienne’, ‘Valse Romantique’ and ‘Nocturne’. The actual publication of ‘Rêverie’ did not occur until April 1905 at which time, Debussy wrote to the publisher Fromont: “It was a mistake to bring out the ‘Rêverie’. Published by David McKeown (A0.587647). Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.This version is arranged as a solo for Violin with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. Nikolai Andreyevitch Roslawez (1880/81-1944) studied violin in his youth, taught violin later and very often even gave concerts himself. The works he left comprise numerous compositions for his favourite instrument: two violin concertos, six sonatas, cycles such as Three Dances (1923) and 24 Preludes (1941/1942) as well as many individual pieces. The two volumes published here for the first time complete the publication of his works for this instrumentation. The different and varied character pieces date from the years 1907 to 1910 and 1930 and show the development of his personal style. Whereas the early pieces are rather traditional, Roslawez' later pieces show his way toward his individual tonal system; the closeness to Skriabin's music is conspicuous. The repertoire for this style is particularly sparse, and this is why both volumes are real treasure chests of character pieces and can be recommended to every violinist.

The compositions published here for the first time are highly interesting, especially because they represent two creative periods: Poème lyrique was written in the 1910s and is a proof of the composer's intensive search for his own style. Invention and Nocturne were composed in Moscow in 1935, they are testimonies to the political pressure exerted on the composer to write in a more comprehensible, less avant-garde way. All three pieces are ideal for music lessons, yet also effective on the stage. Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was one of the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s. Treated with increasing hostility for political reasons, up to being barred from pursuing his career, he spent the last years of his life in poverty.

The original lyrics, written in French by Placide Cappeau, were commissioned for a Christmas service in a small French town. In 1855, John Sullivan Dwight, an American abolitionist, translated the song into English. Dwight viewed the song’s message as a metaphor for the fight against slavery, which contributed to its popularity in the United States. In this version, the composition was arranged for Violin and Piano by Harry Walker.

A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite.
