It is set in the key of D and is arranged for a level 3 violinist. Reinforce techincal concepts with this famous Broadway tune. It begins in first position. The reprise of the chorus is then played entirely in 3rd position. The piano then takes the melody for the 3rd reprise of the chorus and the violin plays an obbligato. 1 octave scales in both 1st and 3rd position challenge the student to play scales using sixteenth notes. There is minimal shifting from 1st to 3rd position. Alternate fingering is included for one passage using a 4th finger extension on the E string.Most of the bow strokes used are legato detache. There is one measure of up-bow staccato on a D major scale. And one measure of brushed off the string bowing for a D major scale.This arrangement of Do-Re-Mi will help students improve and reinforce technique while playing a song they love.

This is my composition from several movements written by various composer members of the Delian Society to illustrate the novel Le Horla by Guy de Maupassant Details, pdf files and mp3 files of the whole suite can be found at:https://dwsolo.com/le-horla-2012-after-the-novel-by-guy-de-maupassant/ This movement is introduced by the narrator as follows: On the left, down yonder, lies Rouen, populous Rouen with its blue roofs massing under pointed, Gothic towers. Innumerable are they, delicate or broad, dominated by the spire of the cathedral, full of bells which sound through the blue air on fine mornings, sending their sweet and distant iron clang to me, their metallic sounds, now stronger and now weaker, according as the wind is strong or light. The protagonist is still in a happy mood, before the madness of Le Horla descends upon him. The sogetto cavato on the name of Guy de Maupassant, used in all of the compositions, is taken as part of the Dorian scale initially, to be transmogrified halfway through into the major scale, representing the optimistic mood of our anti-hero at the outset as he listens to the cheerful bells of Rouen and thinks all is well with his world. In counterpoint to the sogetto cavato you can also hear the first quarter of the hourly chime of Rouen Cathedral played on the bassoon, both themes interweaving playfully in four time, in seven time and in two-two-three time throughout the movement. The misleadingly cheerful scene is set.

An experience that many conductors may feel they have experienced.The music is from the original 'War of the Worlds' film and was recorded by Justin Heyward and the band 'Moody Blues'.There are solo versions with piano accompaniment of this song available for a variety of instruments in suitable keys. The difficulty level ranges between grade 3 to 5 based on the ABRSM/Trinity scale requirements.A 10 piece version and various solo versions with piano accompaniment are available for this work together with a full brass band version. The First Noel arranged for Violin & Piano with new harmony for the final verse. Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Violin Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.

South Bay Angle was originally composed in 1991 during an Astor Piazzolla-inspired fit of tango-madness. While a more appropriate title for the piece would have been something on the lines of I Can Write One of Those! or This Gringo’s Token Tango, circumstances conspired in another titular direction. The piece was originally intended for performance on a program produced by Composers, Inc., a new-music collective in which I was (and remain) an artistic director. Composers Inc. was then in its seventh season. In those days when newspapers still mattered, Composers, Inc. sought to receive as many print reviews as possible. To that end, the organization invited Paul Hertelendy - who was then the music critic for the San Jose Mercury News - to cover its concerts. He said he would do so provided that there was some sort of south-bay angle which addressed the specific needs of his south-bay readership. Thinking myself clever, I thus entitled the piece South Bay Angle. Hertelandy would get his angle and Composers, Inc. would get its coverage. It didn’t work out that way. The piece was never performed; Hertelendy never got his angle; and Composers, Inc. never received a review from the San Jose Mercury News. Instead, twenty years later, I returned to South Bay Angle and rewrote it from the ground up. The piece is cast as a large-scale A-B-A form. The violin is a willing participant in the tango during the A sections, but a rather reluctant tangoista in the B section, during which it tries mightily to turn the music into a waltz. It does not succeed, and the piece ends as it began, in a blaze of rhythmic fury.

I decided to write a short fantasia about this phenomenon. I decided to use the very famous opening of the Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations for this piece. A very sweet sounding opening to a devastated effect. I have decided to use a pretty unconventional notation. I think a star is full of mystery, and you always get surprises when you improvise. In my music, I like to try new things! And of course, despite new things, I will always use back my own prestige extracts from some of my works. I have used an almost similar notation in my Sky 2 for piano solo, and the last movement of the Six Improvisatory Pieces for solo piano.The interval between the highest and the lowest pitch of the Mozart’s Variations is a Major 6th. To get the intended transcription into my work, I cut the keyboard into 6 different ranges. Because the range of the violin is not as big as the piano, I cut the violin into 3 different ranges. If want will to realize, Mozart uses all 6 notes of the opening C major scale, and hence, I transcribe it into chord clusters into my work. The Destruction of a Twinkling Star is dedicated to my friends Miss Lee Xin Yee and Mr Kelvin Koh.
