Spring was written as part of violinist Krysia Osostowicz and pianist Daniel Tong's 'Beethoven Plus' project, for which a new five-minute work has been commissioned as a companion to each of Beethoven's ten violin sonatas. The idea is to form a bridge from present to past, allowing Beethoven's sonatas to be heard afresh, as radical and provocative as they were 200 years ago. Huw Watkins' Spring is the companion to Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 5 which also bears the title 'Spring', and it will be performed alongside the sonata.

This collection includes the first modern edition of Mackintosh's G minor Sonata. These pieces are ideal for auditions and exams as well as concerts and can be performed as whole sonatas or single movements. The accompaniments are simple and effective. the instrumentation is flexible - suitable for violin or flute and cello or bassoon, plus keyboard. The sonatas are newly researched by the Scottish musicologist David Johnson.

Funeral March for a Marionette is,perhaps, composer Charles Gounod's most famous composition. This is largelybecause it was used as the theme song of the popular 1950s television series AlfredHitchkok Presents.

Gounod wrote the piece in 1872. Thepiece, originally for piano, describes the story of a marionette who is killedin a duel. In the original score, Gounod included comments in French matchingthe action in the story to the music:

· La Marionnette est cassée!!!(The marionette is broken!!!)

· Murmure de regrets de la troupe(Murmurs of regret from the troupe)

· Le Cortège (The procession)

· Ici plusieurs des principaux personnages de la troupes'arrêtent pour se rafraîchir (Here many of the principalpersonages stop for refreshments)
