Artaria Editions AE436Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785. This sonata is the most virtuosic and imposing work in this genre that the composer wrote. Of particular interest is the use of a slow introduction with lyrical violin solo, the long Adagio with its alternating solo passages, and the playful final Scherzo which bears a thematic similarity to the now-lost original third movement of Kraus's Violin Concerto (VB 151). Indeed, this complex work merits the rubric Great C major.Allan Badley.

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522283). This beautiful song is one of the most popular American folk songs, evoking images of the river life of yesteryear. It is sure to be a popular addition to your violin recital, or it would make an excellent encore piece. The music lies easily under the hand and the top note is B just above the treble staff.  The standard is about ABRSM violin Grade 3-4 (UK). The duration is 03:55. As with most folk songs, there are many different versions of Shenandoah, and it’s impossible to determine the song’s exact provenance with any degree of certainty. It probably has its origin among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Sailors heading down the Mississippi picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty, which they sang while hauling in the anchor. By the mid-1800s versions of the song were heard almost everywhere the American clipper ships ventured. Shenandoah was one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Stefano Maria Torchio: ScherzinoAs the title says (engl.: little scherzo), it's a small, playful, light and bouncy piece, that features a free atonal style and funny asimmetrical rhythms and metrics. It's not difficult but it could be wise to practice it slower at first, in order to check careful the intonation and the correct smooth and legato articulation between the fingers of left hand of the Violin player. The most careful precision in rhythm and differentiation between the articulations (that in general tends to a light staccato) is required.The piece is also suitable for school pourposes and concerts and also for liturgical ones (for example at the offertory or as final piece) by special festive occasion. Primarily it was composed for a wedding ceremony and it was for Piano and Organ and for Church Bell Carillon.Composer's dataStefano Maria Torchio is an Italian Violinist, Composer and Orchestra and Choir Conductor born in Padova, who builded his education between Italy (Conservatories of Padova and Vicenza, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Accademia L. Perosi in Biella and R.
