In 1897 the great Polish composer Zygmund Noskowski composed four characteristic pieces for piano, each piece evoking a different spring flower. This duet between an Instrumental Solo and piano is my arrangement of Rose from Fleurs du Printemps, Op 48 (Rose, from Flowers of Spring).It is expressive, portraying the beauty of the Rose. I have added considerable markings of articulation and dynamics and phrasing to bring out this expressiveness. I have also changed the tempos to create more emotional variety between the thematic sections and I wrote a new ending with an Instrumental cadenza. The solo instrument plays the various melodic themes while I created a new piano part based on the original chords. The melody contains many accidentals as is typical in the Romantic period. Accessible for the average player yet with enough markings and nuances to satisfy expert players with the results. Definitely a concert or audition piece to show musicianship. Program note: I first met Minami Yoshida when I hired her and her colleagues in the Nico Quartet for a recording session of my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) in the Eben Jordan Studio at the New England Conservatory of Music and then I heard her at an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall. Both events were in the spring of 2019 and she and the quartet were fantastic. I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO. They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording. The next thing I did was to offer to Minami to write a violin sonata for her. She was thrilled with the idea. I decided to call it Mi-la-mi, after her name; the first three notes in the violin for this work are: E - A - E. Mi-la-mi (2020) is in four movements. 1. Moderato, TRIO, Allegro vivace 2. I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

From Greece of the distand past, to Greece of the present and, maybe, to Greece of the years to come, Hellas of the Future. The work is dedicated to the Greek Composer Giannis Konstantinidis. It has been performed by Andrea Hemmenway and Konstantinos Papadakis in Fall Arts Concert organised by Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia in The Ethical Society Hall of Philadelphia in 2010. The same artists perfomed the work at Kendal Concert Hall in Kendal, Pennsylvania in 2011. Version for viola and piano available. Excerpts of violin - piano version has been performed by Tania Sikelianou and Timos Gennatos at : Ellinikon Eidyllion, Selianitika, Aigion in 2011.
