English • German.This Sérénade op. 29 by Auguste Faucheux may also be counted as salon music. Little is known about this violin and viola player from the French city of Lille who also worked in Paris from 1844-1852 as an orchestral violinist at the Opéra comique. His name was listed in 1841 as a member of a string quartet. As in the case with Alard, surviving compositions by Faucheux include arrangements of operatic melodies popular at that time and entertaining pieces for musical salon evenings. Of those pieces published by Schott we have chosen this lively Sérénade, which flashes nimbly by in the style of a Tarantella. Plate no. 21966, published in 1875.

Published by David McKeown (A0.587635). The Wedding Album is a collection of four beautiful and timeless wedding favourites, arranged for Solo Violin with Piano accompaniment. Whether for that Special Day, for a recital, or for your own entertainment, these arrangements are ideal for players at an intermediate level or higher. The 24-page file includes the piano accompaniments and the separate solo parts at the end. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.These four arrangements are also available as single titles for $3.99 each. Published by James Strauss (A0.1035207). The French violinist Henri Vieuxtemps wrote Souvenir d’Amérique, opus 17 for violin and piano, in 1843, during his first concert tour in the United States. This set of variations, based on the melody of the popular song Yankee Doodle, became the entertaining surprise encore piece at Vieuxtemps’ recitals. Its humorous spirit, together with its virtuosic firework displays and imaginative use of playing techniques, made Souvenir d’Amérique an instant audience favorite. My flute arrangement of this work is based on the original edition and the excellent arrangement for flute and piano made by the Italian virtuoso Alberto Roberti (1833-1908). While adapting it for flute and string orchestra, I realized that small compositional changes would be necessary to make it successful as a flute piece, at the same time, I always tried to preserve the composer’s original musical effects. I also added several register changes to the String orchestra parts as well as dynamic indications.I very much hope that this brilliant musical gem will be a welcome addition to the flute repertoire and that it will give joy and pleasure to both the player and the listener. After much deliberation I decided these compositions would serve a dual purpose. First, they would be a progression from easy to difficult beginning with Evensong and ending with Theme & Variations; their purpose, to help solidify the student's first position thereby creating a firmer foundation on which to build all remaining positions. Second, they would be 'parlor room' music; entertaining and challenging enough yet readily playable thereby enticing gifted amateurs to get together and run through them merely for fun.
