Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Melodies in German) is a set of three short pieces for violin and piano composed by Austrian-American violinist Fritz Kreisler. The three pieces are titled Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow), and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary).It is not known when the pieces are written, but they were published in 1905, deliberately misattributed to Joseph Lanner.[citation needed] The pieces had become parts of Kreisler's repertoire well before September 1910, when he copyrighted them under his own name.Kreisler often played these pieces as encores at his concerts, though the pieces are usually performed separately.In 1911, he published solo piano arrangements of the pieces as Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen. The pieces have since appeared in numerous settings for other instruments, or orchestrated.Two of the pieces, Liebesfreud and Liebesleid, were the subject of virtuoso transcriptions for solo piano by Kreisler's friend Sergei Rachmaninoff (1931), who also recorded these transcriptions.

After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with Russian musical folklore and poetry has never been severed. This piece for violin and piano, which will be performed for the first time by the Greek world-class violinist Leonidas Kavakos in London, is an homage to Joseph Haydn to mark his special anniversary. As the Russian played a significant role in Viennese Classicism, it is not surprising that Shchedrin refers to this tradition in his piece.With this commission Rodion Shchedrin, follows in the steps of Joseph Haydn, the bicentenary of whose death was marked in 2009. Haydn took his first trip to the Austrian town of Eisenstadt in 1761 as new vice chapelmaster of the Esterházy family. Eleven years after his death, Haydn's body was transferred to the Haydn Museum in Eisenstadt.

Review of performance by members of Fear No Music (Inez Voglar, violin; Jeff Payne, piano) on inaugural concert of Cascadia Composers, March, 2009 (Aaron Berenbach, Northwest Reverb): Like an André Rieu opium dream, Noland's waltz slowly emerged from a morass of sound, solidified into a lush, decadent, Viennese waltz before dissolving and reforming again and again. Like Bernstein, Noland made great use of the familiar, in this case the easily recognized waltz form, but made it personal, unique, and extremely interesting in his interpretation. As a pianistic bravura piece the composition invites to join in for a feast of chamber music, optionally with violin or cello as partner. The vocal-like coloratura passages of the theme bring in an atmosphere of ''Italianita'', inspired by a famous ''Arietta da camera'', the Bolero of Gaetano Piantanida, that was often performed in music salons of Vienna.
