Healy WILLAN Chaconne 1956 (from Rondino,Elegy & Chaconne, for Organ)Composer of over 800 works and teacher for over 50 years, Mr.Willan was known for long as the Dean of Canadian Composers and was a fixture of the Toronto music scene for a very long while. Apparently he wrote Operas and Symphonies as well, but these have not been easily available to experience. Perhaps this is just Canadian natural reticence or 'reserve'. However, it's a characteristic that is not conducive to cultivating popularity. Nevertheless, Willan's music is simply lovely, and it's nice to know that, if you 'cotton on' to it, you will probably never exhaust his supply, at least to play.CANADIAN COMPOSER (Willan) and CANADIAN ARRANGER (Derrick Lewis).

This peaceful arrangement is perfect for beginner string musicians. Set in E minor, the 1st & 2nd violins have some 1st and 3rd finger extensions, and the 1st violins have a section in natural harmonics, all of which are clearly marked on the score and in the part. The cello part also includes some backwards extensions, while the 3rd violin part is completely in the first position with no extensions.

Viola doubles 2nd violin and cello doubles string bass for a rich, full-sounding, three part harmony. All parts are in 1st position. Despite this piece being playable with only open strings and first finger, the backing track makes it sound much more complex and advanced! The following are assumed to be learnt in advance: Violin 1 / Viola 1 / Cello 1 / Double Bass: Crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and dotted minims (dotted half notes), crotchet rests (quarter rests). Open strings and first finger one tone higher on G, D and A strings. Violin A / Viola A (A for advanced): the above plus second and third fingers making the tone-tone-semitone shape from the open string. Violoncello A: the above plus all four fingers in first shape. The use of second finger is clearly marked. As many or a few parts as required can perform the piece, though the 1 parts have the true melody if used alone. Admittedly the Double Bass part musically interferes with the bass part of the backing track but is added for inclusion purposes. The backing track adds considerably and is essential for the performance. It can be bought separately from the same website. STRING ORCHESTRA WARMUPS is something every orchestra conductor should definitely have included in student music folders. Since the focus is on warming up there is not a high degree of technique involved. They consist of eight warm-up exercises composed specifically for elementary or junior high students. There is also no reason why they could not be used with more advanced players. All exercises are in three part harmony and are very melodic and harmonic and enjoyable to perform. These short exercises are an excellent way for any string orchestra to start or finish a rehearsal concentrating on intonation and producing the best solid and full sound possible.
