This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!

Many of the tunes in the first collection are American, although melodies from Europe are also included. You will find nursery-rhyme rounds and gems from the great classical music composers. Written for two to four parts, my arrangements are for treble, alto and bass clef with a score included as well. You will find tips for better execution of the music, pedagogical ideas and information on the composers and compositions. Rounds are wonderful for improving intonation, ensemble and concentration. The genius of a round is that by staggering the entrances, a simple melody can be transformed into a concert piece that is polyphonic and harmonious. Any two or more people of any age can enjoy making music together with a round.

It was not until 1872 that the poem was set to music by John Baptiste Calkin, an English organist. It is written on a medium easy level for beginning string players in 3 part harmony with viola doubling 2nd violin and cello doubling string bass. The title translates to “first piece†which is meant to be one of the orchestra’s first performance pieces giving the group a chance to perform together for the first time. As noted on the score’s last page the director should feel free to omit the 2nd eighth note and make the 1st eighth note a quarter note throughout.  This will simplify the piece even more. Even with simplification, the melody - which everyone plays unison at the beginning - will be the most difficult part. Take time with it, break it down, and help them get used to those rests. After that, there are three sections that I have labeled in the score that are either harmony or melody. Each instrument plays each of these parts at some point in the piece, but not at the same time. This makes rehearsing and learning the harmony together easy! Obviously, you should put the title of some other piece in your program and Rick Roll your audience - I introduced this piece as Symphony in G by Mozart. This is a really fun way to open a concert.
