My goal was to preserve and articulate the scope and sequence of the curriculum in a concise and efficient manner. This method is intended to foster music reading skills from the beginning when used in conjunction with teacher initiated rote and modeling teaching techniques. Book 2 continues in standard portrait format at 100% scale. Curriculum Scope & Sequence Prerequisite: Book 1 or 1st position (bass 1st & 3rd pos.) on A and D strings. D major, Common time. Eighth, quarter and half notes. Detáche and whole bowing. Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight, eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.

Some of the turn-around chords which were chromatic I have altered to be diatonic chords for ease of the player given that it is for an intermediate-level group.The Violin 1 part has the main melody, and pizzicato at the beginning and end. The Violin 2 part as normal supports Violin 1 with harmony which is most of the time in thirds just like the original.The Violin 3 part is the easiest of all the parts mostly playing dotted half notes on the G string as well as playing a little pizzicato.The Cello part has a lot of the color for the chords and the B section has a little counter melody.The Bass part uses, pizzicato and arco, low F naturals and one Eb, as well as dotted quarter notes for the main theme to match the violins.It can also be played as a string quintet if desired. This adaption for 3-part string orchestra (violin 2/ viola) and optional piano is in the key of G and uses quarter, half, dotted half, 2 eighths and 4 eighths rhythms. Violin 1 does go up to C natural (L2), ‘cello and bass go up to B and down to C natural. Dynamics used are p, mf and f and there are several bow lifts. Tempo is ‘Moderato at 108’. Great piece for end of the first year or the fall concert of the second year. Suggested grade: 1/1+.

This short (1:30) piece teaches eighth note and dotted quarter-eighth patterns along with low 2 (F) in the 1st violin, 2nd finger (F) for ‘cello and bass, bow lifts, crescendo, repeat, staccato and pizzicato techniques while still having a very simple and catchy melody. Maybe try a few non-pitched percussion instruments to brighten up the performance. It is written the key of D and is a suggested grade 1.
