Continuing the tradition of pieces based on characters in the Dungeons and Dragons game that I run, The Bedouin of Wyrms follows a young ranger who struggles to find a place in the world, trying to find out how to deal of moral quandaries with no correct answer. Despite this, Sylveon Jastire keeps a kind heart and solemn sense of purpose. The Passionate Sylveon Jastire is young and adventurous, with the naivete to match. With this outlook, she cares about only one thing; protecting her family by entering the wilds and taking care of any threats before they even have the chance to become problems. The Lamented and The Headstrong Sylveon, known colloquially as Silver, learns the difficulties of the world, and that nothing is as straight-forward as it was at her desert temple home. In the second movement, Silver learns the consequences actions have on the world, both good and bad. In the third, her resolve tightens as she doubles down on her ideals. The purpose of this arrangement is to furnish material for a Junior High or Senior High Orchestra to use in playing a concerts for the Kindergarten/1st Grade/2nd Grade and 3rd Grade Kids. This gives the players an chance to play a fun concert for people they know---and is also a great recruiting tool for future orchestra members. The tunes are all ones that the younger kids know , or should know. A suggested plan for doing this is on the back cover--a list of the 20 tunes is included. This is one of a series of charts for string orchestra that are easy to play and each relate to a single theme---patriotic, ethnic, activity, holiday or age related songs. Being easy to play---nothing past an eighth note and no hemi-demi-semi-quavers--they will be more apt to be in tune and this is good for all concerned. They all are in tempo and have a swing feeling to them to make your audience like them. After all--this is about making music and not displaying technique. His plan was to premiere the piece with his group (he was teaching at Garden City Community College at the time) that next fall. Unfortunately, the strings program was cut at the end of that semester and he never had the chance program the piece. It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Tabor College Symphonic Orchestra under my direction. It was inspired by the painting Twisted Ironies, a beautiful portrayal of a tornado, which was given to the composer as a gift by the artist. The drum set part was added at the suggestion of a string teacher in the community. The piece alternates dramatic lyricism with driving string and percussion statements. There is an optional first violin solo as well as a drum set solo, which will add some flair to you concert!
