Latin.Commissioned by the American Music Research Center, Boulder, Colorado, Thomas Riis, director, in loving memory of Don Campbell. The work received its premiere performance at l’Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, on October 24, 2013 by Alexis Galpérine, violin, Magali Léger, soprano, Saori Kikuchi, harp, and Carolyn Shuster Fournier, organist. The work consists of three Latin texts from the Requiem Mass. The first, Exaudi, is in “Larghetto†tempo and serves as a prelude. The second, Dies Iræ, marked “Allegro agitato,†is an intense and dark scherzo in D minor with chromatic runs in the organ and violin which accompany the soprano. A central, more lyrical section follows based on the “Lacrymosa†text in a slower tempo, leading to the song’s only serene moment: “Pie Jesu Domine.†The “Dies Irae†music returns, and the song ends violently and decisively. The third song, In Paradisum, introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,†and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 12:30.

Although Erik Satie is now best known for his sometimes quirky and sometimes sublime solo piano works, he also wrote dozens of songs. This collection includes two of his popular songs widely performed in early 20th century Parisian cabarets, along with three miniatures, and four songs that draw on both the serious, avant-garde style of the time, as well as the popular music styles of the cabarets. This beautiful song comes from a short collection of songs that Brahms wrote relatively late in his career.  He was working on his Violin Sonata No.2 at about the same time, and so it’s natural that piece also quotes from this work.  The song itself is a wonderful example of late Romantic harmonic and Brahms’s own lyrical melodic writing.This piece would be good for developing and refining tonal production and vibrato.  While none of the parts goes up very high, it’s not recommended for performers to stay in first position throughout the piece.  There are also opportunities to refine ensemble skills of phrasing and rubato.  Cross-curricular instruction (with English and/or German) is possible with the original song via discussion on its meaning and how Brahms tried to represent that meaning within the musical form of the work.

In 1910, in Bath, Somerset, the English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly initially wrote the words to Danny Boy to a tune other than Londonderry Air. One story is that his sister-in-law Margaret Enright Weatherly (AKA Jess) sent him a copy of Londonderry Air in 1913 and Weatherly modified the lyrics of Danny Boy to fit its rhyme and meter. A different story has Jess singing the air to Weatherly in 1912 with different lyrics. Yet another story is that Frederic did not set the poem to any tune, but that, in 1913, Margaret, who, with her husband Edward Weatherly, was living at the Neosho mine near Ouray, Colorado in the US, set it to the Londonderry Air which she had heard as a child in California played by her father and other Irish railway workers.Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular songs of the new century.
