While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Bagatelle No. 7 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a charming and playful piece, typical of Beethoven's early style. The piece is in A-flat major and marked Presto, which means fast. The main theme is catchy, fragmentary, and light, with a playful character that is maintained throughout the piece. On a trip to Key West, he visited Ernest Hemingway’s house. In the sundrenched garden, music leapt into O’Connor’s mind and in a breathtaking two hours, Surrender the Sword – and its orchestral outline – was on paper. It is unquestionably one of the most passionate orchestral pieces he has ever written. In the A part, the music is busy. You can imagine voices, perhaps in Congress, perhaps in a crowd in New York or Philadelphia, wondering what is going to happen next, as General George Washington is about to resign as commander-in-chief of the American army, O’Connor says. Then comes a long melodic arc, swelling with a triumphant confidence that depicts the great military leader extending his sword to surrender it forever. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.924852). This is one of the most important and original pieces in the composer's catalog. It was begun in 2001 and completed from sketches in 2018. The composer began it as an elegy to both his father and to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but since it was completed so much later, he removed that dedication from the performance materials. The mood is nevertheless deeply sad and piercingly poignant. The musical language is 12-tone, but is loaded with minor triads/trichords tinged with dissonances and contextual resolutions, most of which sound like suspended fourths. Duration: 7:00.
