Henri Wieniawski composed two Polonaises The Polonaise No. 1, Op.4 in D-major, emerges as a youthful endeavor, while the Op.21 in A-major stands as one of his final compositions.Completed in 1870, the Polonaise in A-major debuted with orchestral accompaniment in St. Petersburg, followed by a piano-accompanied performance in Warsaw, showcasing Wieniawski's adaptability. The piece received critical acclaim from its inception, lauded as a magnificent piece, a sentiment echoed in subsequent reviews across Russian and Western European publications.Published by Schott Publishers in Mainz around 1875, the Polonaise in A-major reveals a well-developed concert piece. Creative Strings is a collection of works designed to lead beginning to advanced students through their first experiences as improvisers. Each piece is composed of four parts that can roughly be described as melody, harmony, accompaniment and bass line. All four parts are available for the violin, viola and cello. The bass has one part. An optional piano part is also provided. The the ideal distribution is Vln. 1, Vln. 2, Vla. 3, and Cello 4. However the intentionally redundant parts allow for flexible combinations of instruments. If for example, no violas or cellos are available, a violin choir could still cover the parts. The same would hold true for a non-traditional quartet such as 3 violins and 1 cello or any other grouping. Overlapping parts can also be used to equalize an unbalanced orchestra such as 20 violins and 1 viola player by having some of the violins double the viola part.

Tears for Elsa is a soulful piece written in 6/8 with a feel of 2 in each bar. The second violins move the piece forward with their moving quavers in second and first position, while the firsts carry the glorious tune. The piano accompaniment is a lovely addition to the work, but not needed for performance. This piece is found in Violin Time Book 2, but has been beautifully arranged for String Ensemble. Suitable for Grade 4-5 AMEB level string orchestra.

First violin is the most difficult part. It is duplicated in the piano. This piece could be played by a more elementary group without the first violin if the piano part is accompanies the group. Easy parts in second violin, third violin, viola II, and cello II.

Other instruments begin joining in for a full sound then ends with the viola and cello alone. This can be played as an ensemble or quartet. The piece begins and ends in a canonic structure with variations in the middle. Great experience playing largo with long continuous bowing and expressive mood.

With a challenging solo, this piece was written to be very easy for a high school orchestra with few rehearsals, though college, community and professional ensembles may find it to be a charming addition to a concert or recording project. It is a piece you could use to include a good pianist, student or adult, as a guest with your string orchestra. Although written for harpsichord, the solo part could be played on any keyboard, piano or organ. The soloist should adjust dynamics, articulations, and tone colors to best compliment the instrument and accompanying orchestra. It is written in three movements, but the intention is to play through the piece with no stops. You may omit the usual listing of movement tempo markings in your printed program. The string parts are quite easy. However, the second movement is primarily a duet between solo violin and harpsichord. Let me know if you buy this.
