Within those strictures he created many beautiful and powerful works. A romantic period ballade usually implies a poetic narrative and often composed without a specific form. Completed in 1893, Brahms has set this Ballade in ABA form and is a part of his later piano works displaying a forceful opening contrasted with a light middle section. It finishes quietly and, as some have posited, introspectively. This is an arrangement for 4 Violins, 3 Violas, 3 Celli, & Bass. In addition to works by Brahms, we offer works by J.S. Although this work draws upon folk music styles, it does not quote or use anyactual folk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composingan “original folk tune†within that musical style. Each movement of the work is then a simplearrangement in my own musical style of my original tunes. The formal and harmonic languageof the work is very simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. The middlesections contain settings of the basic melody—first presented over a bagpipe-like drone (withinterjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with a simplemelody in the Nigerian/Yoruba folk style. As the movement progresses, the violin plays the roleof a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodies and textures over the basicrefrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant—alluding to the songs of the Shakers. Abasic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrasting excursions. The set contains the score and solo part only. Published by Musika Publishing Australia (A0.567101). The Barnyards O’Delgaty is one of the most famous ‘Bothy Ballads’ (a song sung by farm labourers in the northeast region of Scotland). The farm of Barnyards is on the Delgaty estate a mile north east of Turriff. The melody is derived from an old Lowland love song called ‘Linton Lowrie’ by Alexander MacKenzie and James Ballantine thought to have bee composed early in the 20th Century. A reference to ‘Linton Lowrie’ can be found in the chorus: Linten adie, tooren adie,Linten adie, tooren ay,inten lowerin lowerin lowerin,The Barnyards o Delgaty. This lively arrangement by Kate Agioritis traverses a range of keys, and provides each player with an opportunity to showcase the playful melody.
