Timing: 5 min.I wrote this composition for 2 solo clarinets accompanied by a string orchestra. In this minimalist opus I tried to reflect an inevitable and painful desire to overcome the gravity into a free floating with a point of no return at the end. Clarinet parts require special attention to a stable sound in the upper register (from Piano to Fortissimo), as they include notes of maximum height. The number of strings can vary, but the best effect and the full sound of the score can be achieved with an orchestra no less than - 8, 6, 4, 4, 2.

I wrote this composition for 2 solo clarinets accompanied by a string orchestra. Add a touch of blues to your string orchestra repertoire with this lazy ‘ole’ tune in the style of early Duke Ellington, at the time he was playing New York’s Cotton Club. In this type of number, Ellington typically used three clarinets playing a harmonised melody, which is why this tune, Harlem Love Call, works well with a string orchetra, the three clarinets being replaced by violins 1, violins 2 and violas. The celli and basses play a supporting role and propel everything along. Play it in a lazy fashion and bend a few notes here and there if you wish. It’s that kind of piece. Note that it starts quietly at A and increases in volume through B and C. It quietens down at D and E is quieter still (pianissimo) through to the end. Length 2.30 mins.

Grade 2.5 string orchestra: Klezmer music was the tradition of Eastern European Jewish secular musicians who played for weddings and other celebrations in the 16th through 19th centuries, with very expressive melodies which mimicked the human voice (crying and laughing). In the early years authorities prohibited the playing a very loud music, so stringed instruments and accordion formed the basis of the ensemble. Later clarinets and trumpets were added, and today, revival groups add any instrument they wish. The name zemer comes from the Hebrew 'to make music' and this composer's maiden name, Chuzmir, was Chu-zemer, meaning 'one who makes music.'.

The arrangement is attractive enough for public performance but it is written at a level suitable for training students of an early to intermediate level of playing ability. The string parts are straightforward and suitable as a student introduction to orchestral playing. (There is no double stopping. Viola parts and cello parts are entirely in their home clefs.)
