Simple Song of Keys is designed as a daily warm-up routine to teach students to be comfortable, and in tune, when performing in various major keys. Despite the fact the most music for first and second year performers is written in GM and DM, these can be especially difficult keys for violists (requiring extreme third finger stretches of smaller hands) and cellists (with second and fourth finger extensions). And string players often fear the less familiar keys employing flats because they must avoid the safety of open strings. Yet these same keys often fit more comfortably under the smaller hand. The pieces may be played individually to prepare for the key of the repertoire being played that day, or in broad sequence to learn to move from key to key.

This would be great for beginner orchestras.

Although this work draws upon folk music styles, it does not quote or use anyactual folk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composingan “original folk tune†within that musical style. Each movement of the work is then a simplearrangement in my own musical style of my original tunes. The formal and harmonic languageof the work is very simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. The middlesections contain settings of the basic melody—first presented over a bagpipe-like drone (withinterjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with a simplemelody in the Nigerian/Yoruba folk style. As the movement progresses, the violin plays the roleof a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodies and textures over the basicrefrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant—alluding to the songs of the Shakers. Abasic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrasting excursions. The set contains the score and solo part only. The music is organized by levels of difficulty. Volume 1 is 14 rounds for first to third year players. Volumes 2 and 3 will be coming soon. Many of the tunes in the first collection are American, although melodies from Europe are also included. You will find nursery-rhyme rounds and gems from the great classical music composers. Written for two to four parts, my arrangements are for treble, alto and bass clef with a score included as well. You will find tips for better execution of the music, pedagogical ideas and information on the composers and compositions. Rounds are wonderful for improving intonation, ensemble and concentration. The genius of a round is that by staggering the entrances, a simple melody can be transformed into a concert piece that is polyphonic and harmonious. Any two or more people of any age can enjoy making music together with a round.
