Gregory Sullivan Isaacs; Night Into Dawn for string ensemble, score only

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534672 Composed by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs. Contemporary,Jewish. Score and parts. 29 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5775635. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534672). The concept for this piece is to restore the voice of millions silenced by the horrific experience we now call the Holocaust, through the sounds of musical instruments that survived. One thing is clear: the genocide of the Jews was an appalling blow to the human race; one that left a permanent stain on both the perpetrators and enablers, those who stood by without uttering a word of protest. A terrible Night descended upon the world, yet, the breaking Dawn that followed was glorious, indeed. The price to save civilization in the 20th century was appallingly high. Although we must remain ever vigilant, the Jewish people today have a proud homeland—and their magnificent contributions to humanity are universally celebrated. The piece opens with the descent of the seemingly benign curtain of night. Premonitions arise but the darkness continues to descend, over and over again. Finally, chaos ensues and runs its ghastly course before dissipating. The inevitable dawn begins to break, although the curtain of night continues to threaten. Dawn is characterized by two contrasting melodies. One, a stalwart tune that marches ever forward, while the second, more questioning tune appears independently. After their separate statements, the two powerfully join forces to bring this work to a hopeful close, followed by a quiet “Amen.†This item is the score only. The parts are available on rental from the publisher.

Klezmer Concerto - for clarinet, strings, harp, and percussion (full score)
Orchestre à Cordes
String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.944031 Composed by Ofer Ben-A…
(+)
String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.944031 Composed by Ofer Ben-Amots. Contemporary,Jewish. Score and parts. 132 pages. The Composer's Own Press #4609863. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944031). THE KLEZMER CONCERTO The concerto opens with a slow but intense movement titled Pastoral Doyna.  A Doyna is a lament-like melody -- both declamatory and melancholic -- of Eastern-European origin, most likely Rumanian, Gypsy, or Jewish. The opening by the string ensemble is reminiscent of the awakening sound of nature. On top of the busy accompaniment the clarinet enters with occasional shouts, echoes, and cry-like gestures. The second movement is a sort of a wedding-waltz, titled: Dance of the Seven Circles. The name goes back to the old Jewish tradition according to which a bride must circle seven times around the bridegroom before the actual start of the marriage ceremony. Its nature of this movement is a mixture of irony and passion, humor and pain. At the end of the waltz the clarinetist is invited to play a free cadenza and improvise on previous motives and melodic patterns. The movement ends with a return to the orchestra, with a soulful lament and quiet murmuring of the soloist. The third and last movement of the concerto is titled Halleluya. It is inspired by the textual content, vibrant rhythms and many musical instruments suggested in the 150th Psalm. Toward the end of this movement, there is a second solo cadenza in a perpetual motion style, where upon the players of the orchestra join in and add their voices to the pandemonium with a song of praise: Halleluya! Parts available through rental only! For performance materials, demo recording, questions, or any additional information please e-mail Ofer Ben-Amots at: thecomposerspress@gmail.com

Olga-Polka, Op. 196 (arr. for string orchestra): Violin I
Orchestre à Cordes
String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.922634 Composed by Johann Str…
(+)
String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.922634 Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. Arranged by Aaron Meier. Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 1 pages. Aaron Meier #5792359. Published by Aaron Meier (A0.922634). Original by Johann Strauss II Reduction to String Orchestra by Aaron Meier Part: Violin I True to the original work by Strauss, this reduction for string orchestra features the ornaments and mystical writing that defines Strauss' polkas. There are optional percussion parts to be added at the discretion of the ensemble, however even without percussion the ensemble will sound full (the percussion acts as an ornament). Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced - advanced (best-suited for advanced student ensembles) --- Performance Notes: • Approximate length: 3:30 minutes • 1st Violins: In m. 1, trill a half step from a D♠to a D♮ • 2nd Violins:  - At m. 42, divide players by 3, with 2 players playing line A and the remaining player playing line B  - At m. 72-75, emphasize the E♠in the div. • Snare Drum: The buzz roll needs to be quieter than how it is played in the midi recording (*see YouTube link ↓) History: The Olga-Polka itself owed its creation to a Russian royal wedding which took place in St. Petersburg on 28 August 1857. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. Reporting on this event, the Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (3.11.1857) observed: The 'Olga-Polka' is a most delightful, fragrant musical bouquet, full of fine, gracious rhythms. String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.922638 Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. Arranged by Aaron Meier. Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 1 pages. Aaron Meier #5792369. Published by Aaron Meier (A0.922638). Original by Johann Strauss II Reduction to String Orchestra by Aaron Meier Part: Viola True to the original work by Strauss, this reduction for string orchestra features the ornaments and mystical writing that defines Strauss' polkas. Shows like 'The Paradise', 'Selfridges', 'Downton Abbey', etc. with phenomenal scores have impacted my creativity. It's not just BBC shows, however. Its also composers like the William-Gregson Brothers and Maurizio Malagnini. The title comes from the series, Lark Rise to Candleford' which in turn is based on a trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels written by author Flora Thompson.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.886673 Composed by Panagiotis Theodossiou. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 63 pages. Panagiotis Theodossiou #3073729. Published by Panagiotis Theodossiou (A0.886673). Theme and Variations, for string orchestra (2005). The work is written especially for the composer’s final composition diploma and has been his second attempt to write a work in a large scale (the first was a cello concerto - fantasia). The theme, on which ten variations lead to the grandiose finale, is written by a composer’s good friend, Nikos Drelas. The strict polyphonic writing of the earlier serial works as well as the free homophonic style of the last almost tonic are here altogether in a almost progressive idiom. The programmatic nature of this composition coexists with the absolute musical sound form. Titles of variations like Waltz funebre or Jazz Polka, in an austere musical text give the point for a new direction in composer’s creative thinking. Parts of the work have been performed by Philothei - Psychico Youth Orchestra under the direction of the composer at Benetatou Cultural Center in October 2014.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFJX5DXQaiAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASIC4x8BV_4&t=2shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijsl8qz8Q5Qhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiitDuH4wCkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeVUcJUIbFA&t=2s

Furthermore, the slow tempo and long phrases require a thoughtful and well-controlled use of the bow. Imitative voices traded between instruments invite each section to articulate their entrances thus keeping the forward motion alive.  Finally, although the dynamics remain mostly in the reange of p or mp--mf or f, there are moments of ff and pp (especially at the end) with crescendo and diminuendo markings throughout which are crucial for bringing out the expressive and poetic nature of the piece.
