All the cool melodies are split between the violins and the cellos while the bass plays moving bass lines but the poor viola, left to the last bits of harmony no one else is using. But in Voila Viola!, the viola is the star! The cheerful melody allows room for the viola to really express itself while being backed by moving harmonies. This piece is great for teaching timing and listening to the other players. Wide ranging eighth notes dominate this piece with emphasis on the viola's changing melodies while the backing harmonies keep the piece with the playfulness of pizzicato.

Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862513). A musette is a bassline that typically uses alternating low and high octaves to keep the underpinnings of a melody moving right along. Here we have that broken octave figure split into two voices, the cello and bass. Thus, no one section has to keep alternating up and down. The tune is a Shubertian sort of easy-going, elegant song. It is harmonized with as much color as the basic scalar melody can absorb, without getting too radical in its tonal range. The final section uses two dotted quarters in each measure instead of three plain quarter-notes. Bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time at the suggested tempo is 3 mins. The piece CAN go faster should your group be up to that task! Remember, ALL notes are in 1st position for all sections, no trills or fast passages across strings, all standard up and down bowings, no pizzicato or divisi. Makes a nice opening piece, or the end of the first section of a two-part program. MBB.

Dear orchestra-teaching colleague, If you are teaching a group of students with mixed ability levels, and you want to find a tune they will all love, add this tune to your repertoire!This spicy concerto has a light-hearted, peppy, baroque feel. l wrote it for a group of students that included a couple of advanced players, ten complete beginners who would need to perform for the first time six weeks after getting their instruments, and a core group of early intermediate players. I wanted each musician to enjoy their part, and I wanted it to be a piece the audience would rave about as they took their kids out for post-concert ice cream that evening.It still retains is zest even without the advanced part, and if you want to add a little more heat there is even space for students to write or improvise a cadenza!I hope you enjoy this piece as much as we have:).
