The first violin part has a little section of natural and artificial harmonics which is more advanced than the other parts, and the unison solo section is played by all upper strings together. This arrangement works as a string quartet (2 violins, viola/violin 3, cello) and as a quintet with the addition of double bass or bass guitar. Parts are bowed. (also known as Proud to Be an American) is an American patriotic song written and recorded by American country music artist Lee Greenwood, and is considered to be his signature song. The first album it appears on is 1984's You've Got a Good Love Comin'. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart when originally released in the spring of 1984, and was played at the 1984 Republican National Convention with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan in attendance, but the song gained greater prominence during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991, as a way of boosting morale, and was re-included on his 1992 album American Patriot as a result of its newfound popularity.The popularity of the song rose sharply after the September 11 attacks and during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the song was re-released as a single, re-entering the country music charts at No. 16 and peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 2001. The song was also re-recorded in 2003 and released as God Bless the U.S.A. 2003. Greenwood also wrote a Canadian version of this song called God Bless You Canada. Middle parts are slightly redistributed for ease in the third violin part, which is the same as the viola part and can be omitted. Cello and bass parts are alike, so it can also be played by string quartet. There is some careful editing, including indications as to whether the grace notes should be on or before the beat. Written with school groups in mind that might have a few good violins to play the melody. It's tiring for young players to play so much pizzicato, but with one violin part made easier takes much less rehearsal time! However it can be enjoyed by string players of all ages. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522247). Shetland Sunrise is a movement from Colin Kirkpatrick's suite for elementary string orchestra entitled “Atlantic Highwayâ€. Ideal for end-of-semester concerts or any other school or college concert occasion, these tuneful and attractive pieces are bound to please audience and instrumentalists alike. The work is scored for violins 1 and 2, viola (with an identical but optional part for violin 3 in treble clef), cello, double bass and piano (or digital keyboard). The piano part is an integral part of music and therefore essential. However, it’s not especially difficult and perfectly manageable by the intermediate pianist. All the string parts can be played in first position. Pizzicato is used extensively in the double bass part and in some of the passages for the upper strings. Shetland Sunrise is in G major throughout and the time signature begins in 5/8. This might look a bit daunting to elementary places not used to seeing it but the music is a good deal easier than it appears. Because every 5/8 measure (bar) naturally falls into groups of 3 and 2 beats, the players should be told to count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, rather than one to five. They will soon pick up the irregular lilting rhythm. There are also a couple of measures of 7/8 in this piece, which should be counted as 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2. The string parts have been produced in fairly large type making them ideal for elementary players. Cues have been added where necessary.

This beautiful song comes from a short collection of songs that Brahms wrote relatively late in his career.  He was working on his Violin Sonata No.2 at about the same time, and so it’s natural that piece also quotes from this work.  The song itself is a wonderful example of late Romantic harmonic and Brahms’s own lyrical melodic writing.This piece would be good for developing and refining tonal production and vibrato.  While none of the parts goes up very high, it’s not recommended for performers to stay in first position throughout the piece.  There are also opportunities to refine ensemble skills of phrasing and rubato.  Cross-curricular instruction (with English and/or German) is possible with the original song via discussion on its meaning and how Brahms tried to represent that meaning within the musical form of the work.

The good news is that once these sections are learned the first time around, they are repeated a few times so that the piece has continuity and becomes enjoyable to play.

This is a fun, quick piece in an American Hoe-Down style. In the key of A major, it's a good piece for focusing on G# intonation, as well as cut time rhythms. There are some small fiddle-y ornaments and some exciting dynamic contrasts. Definitely listen to some folk/fiddle music together as part of your study! The piece also has a lot of repeats and a DC al Fine so lots of 'roadmap' music theory practice. Last, I had my students play double stops throughout this piece, but you could do divisi if that were more appropriate to your ensemble. I hope your students enjoy playing this piece as much as mine did.

The creatures range in size and temperament from small and feisty to large and lazy and everything in-between. The piece is intermediate difficulty and is good for ensembles at the university level and higher. There are no extended techniques. It’s possible to play this piece as a string quintet instead of for orchestra but some of the divisi may take some time to sort out.
