Published by STR:UK String Arrangements (A0.850384). God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, traditional Christmas carol, arranged by Tim Crooks for String Ensemble (ABRSM Beginner - grade 5). This arrangement can be performed by strings alone, or alongside the compatible SSA choir download: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/god-rest-you-merry-gentlemen-str-uk-version-choir-sheet-digital.... This jazzy 7/8 version cranks up the traditional carol into more of a party rendition, but remaining regular enough so it can still be sung by a congregation or school choir. Perfect for ending carol services and Christmas performances. Technical challenges are mostly rhythmic, but 7/8 patterns are strong and repeat so is suitable for good intermediate groups (ABRSM grade 4+). The arrangement also includes an optional easy part for Violin & Viola suitable for ABRSM grade 2+ level players. Piano and percussion parts are included but are optional for performance. Published by Ronan Bodisch (A0.1095833). This intense and emotional piece draws inspiration from classical/romantic composers, such as Edward Elgar, while also mixing in modern elements. Performance Notes: Dissonance is very common in this piece. It will not help the orchestra if the players cower away from it, rather than play it confidently. Don't second-guess whether or not the right notes are being played. Be sensitive to whoever has the moving line, as it is passed around the orchestra. At measure 22, the Violas and Cellos should soar above the violins. At measures 26-30, everyone in the orchestra should be playing as loud as humanly possible (go crazy, go bananas), while still remaining sensitive to the moving melodies; this is the composer's signature theme. Be mindful of the key change at measure 35 (F Maj/D Min to B-Flat Maj/G Min). In the end, Violins, Violas, and Cellos should decrescendo to literally nothing on the tremolos. The basses should emphasize pizzicato, but play it lightly, rather than thunderous. The chords in the Harp and Piano should also be brought out.

This traditional German Christmas carol dates from the 19th Century and has received many settings over the years. This arrangement is technically approachable, with some short passages in 3rd position. It can be played comfortably by players of ABRSM grade 3-4 level (intermediate).
