Induced Hope for String Orchestra is written through the inspiration of multiple pieces. There are three short sections. The first section consists of a joyful and brilliant major opening and transition to a minor tonality. The first section features some bends and special percussive sound effects. The second section is a romantic ballad, which explores tension and release cycles which resolves dissonant chords and create a relaxing feeling. The last section is sudden and abrupt, and begins with an unusual 7/4 fast pattern. The melody first plays on high strings and then varied on the low strings to create contrast. It builds up into a climax and finish with a few powerful and chords in rhythmic unison.

This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!

The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. This fun arrangement for an intermediate orchestra has something for everyone. 1st Violin and Viola trade for a while, then 2nd Violin and Cello take over the melody, and then even the basses have the melody for a phrase. Upper strings will need to use extended 3rd fingering - everything else is standard 1st position fingering. Going into the last chorus, you can get the audience to join you singing and clapping. This is a really fun way to end a concert. I hope your students enjoy playing this piece!

This is a fun, quick piece in an American Hoe-Down style. In the key of A major, it's a good piece for focusing on G# intonation, as well as cut time rhythms. There are some small fiddle-y ornaments and some exciting dynamic contrasts. Definitely listen to some folk/fiddle music together as part of your study! The piece also has a lot of repeats and a DC al Fine so lots of 'roadmap' music theory practice. Last, I had my students play double stops throughout this piece, but you could do divisi if that were more appropriate to your ensemble. I hope your students enjoy playing this piece as much as mine did.

I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!

This somber setting of this typical joyous hymn reflects moments in life when pain, sorrow, or remorse overtake one’s ability to sing “Joy to the Worldâ€. Sometimes, we must sing this lyric despite our current circumstances in hopes of what is to come. Musically, there are plenty of opportunities to work on melodic playing and bow technique through phrasing and dynamic swells. A hemiola is prominent in the last half of the piece between lower strings and middle voices. After some harmonic tension, an accelerando, and a release, the melody peacefully resolves. WABI-SABI is written for beginning string players in 3 part harmony with viola doubling 2nd violin and cello doubling string bass. In the event instrumentation is lacking this type of scoring will make your group sound fuller and give your players more confidence. Includes full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, String Bass, 2 Flutes and triangle. It is scored with parts for two flutes but could be played with only the 1st flute if necessary. The traditional aesthetic sensibility of the Japanese could be summed up as Wabi-Sabi and their acceptance of transience and imperfection. In short, nothing lasts and nothing is perfect.
