Suite for Strings in D is an original work that draws its inspiration from previous classical composers of the genre—individuals that set evolving standards in the medium over centuries—including AntonÃn Dvořák, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Edvard Grieg, and Peter Warlock.  The Suite for Strings in D was written to capture some of the stylistic elements found among the works of these composers using musical motives from Keaton’s sketchbooks that have been consolidated into a dance suite with a general four-voice texture to produce a lyrical suite for strings.Stylistic emulations are visible throughout the Suite for Strings in the “Waltz†(Tchaikovsky), the two-part “Ouverture†(Purcell and Corelli), the “Rigaudon†(Peter Warlock), and “La Réjouissance†(Handel).  The suite’s fourth movement, “Alla Marcia,†conveys Keaton’s personal style apart from the other movements’ emulations.

A river meant water forlivestock and agriculture, and the possibility of navigating the waterway for commerce. The energetic main themedepicts these sturdy settlers' aspirations and explorations. But the solemnity gives way to the merry fiddle tune of abarn dance. A wistful waltz in a minor mode contrasts their hardship and loneliness. The main theme returns a newkey, signifying determination and confidence. The piece ends as it began, with a query expressed by the violins,pondering what the future may hold.

It is a dance of unbridled joy to celebrate a rich harvest of nature's bounty. In 2013, I transcribed it from my private archive of old dusty audio tapes no one had ever heard, and with the CarsonValley Sinfonia in mind, revised it for string orchestra without winds.1995 was a low period in my life. The pressure from my job in the technology industry was relentless, and personal relationships at that time sometimes brought emotional pain instead of solace and comfort. Grasping for any ray of hope to illuminate the gloom, I turned back to my original love: music.Immersing myself deeply in the process of music creation, I rediscovered not only a talent for composition, but even more importantly tapped into the creative source of uplift, joy, and energy, the source of all gifts, that is available to every sincere person. During those years, composing music was a vital lifeline. Like the powerful beam of the rescuer's flashlight guiding you toward the daylight when you are emerging from a dark cave. Like a new baby being born. Now a great many years later, life now brimming with music and friends, and having put old sorrows far behind me, music from that time of troubles still fills me with the same joy as when I composed it, and I hope it uplifts you.Harvest Dance is dedicated to my friend, composer John O'Neill, with profound appreciation for his encouragement, as well as helping me learn the practicalities of arranging for a string orchestra.

Its simple, unassuming character portrays a pretty wild rose that one might encounter in the woods. Less elegant than their suburban garden cousins, the loveliness of wild rose blossoms is short-lived, fragrant and undisciplined. Despite immense pressure, frigid water and near darkness, this unimaginably hostile environment holds diverse life forms. Manned exploration poses challenges similar to those of space exploration. Challenger Deep impressionistically depicts the deep ocean's remarkable, wonderful, bizarre, magnificent environment and its rarely-witnessed life forms. The score features unusual harmonies employing the deepest sonorities of the contrabass and cello sections. The upper strings' moving lines depict darting sea creatures and objects slowly dropping for miles underwater. Several musical devices convey the idea of enormous depth, including chromatic passages with lowered notes and themes that gradually transpose lower and lower.
