Your students and audience will both have lots of fun, and this is really effective in recruitment concerts as well. The piece starts with some percussive stomps and slaps that sound great on stage and are instantly recognizable. The 6/8 meter may be a challenge if your students haven't played in that rhythmic space before, but the familiarity of the song will help. The song is squarely in D harmonic minor, and as such gives a good opportunity to practice F natural, B flat, and low C# fingerings. This piece is a blast and I know your students will enjoy playing it.

Even with simplification, the melody - which everyone plays unison at the beginning - will be the most difficult part. Take time with it, break it down, and help them get used to those rests. After that, there are three sections that I have labeled in the score that are either harmony or melody. Each instrument plays each of these parts at some point in the piece, but not at the same time. This makes rehearsing and learning the harmony together easy! Obviously, you should put the title of some other piece in your program and Rick Roll your audience - I introduced this piece as Symphony in G by Mozart. This is a really fun way to open a concert.

This is a fun, quick piece in an American Hoe-Down style. In the key of A major, it's a good piece for focusing on G# intonation, as well as cut time rhythms. There are some small fiddle-y ornaments and some exciting dynamic contrasts. Definitely listen to some folk/fiddle music together as part of your study! The piece also has a lot of repeats and a DC al Fine so lots of 'roadmap' music theory practice. Last, I had my students play double stops throughout this piece, but you could do divisi if that were more appropriate to your ensemble. I hope your students enjoy playing this piece as much as mine did.

This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!

Upper strings will need to use extended 3rd fingering - everything else is standard 1st position fingering. Going into the last chorus, you can get the audience to join you singing and clapping. This is a really fun way to end a concert. I hope your students enjoy playing this piece!

Lots of low 1's, then an Eastern-sounding stretch from Eb to F#. The tempo markings in the second half are recommended targets, but it would definitely be acceptable to keep the tempos lower.

While it may take some time for the students to get used to the compound meter (12/8), the rhythm of the accompmaniment is kept quite simple. Harder will be the fast tempo and the chromatic finger patterns. The piece also starts with two difficult solos for your most advanced violin or viola players - I recommend having them stand on opposite sides of the front of the stage to help with projection. Have the lower strings focus especially on keeping the light staccato style of the piece - put space in between those grooving notes when the eighth rest is marked. I hope you enjoy performing this piece!

I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!
