Martin Lass is an Australian violinist, composer, arranger, and teacher. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,†is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This first piece, Bush Trek, is about a bush walk (hike) in the Australian bush in the Myall Lakes National Park in the state of NSW. The hike takes the trekkers higher and higher until a vast and wonderful vista is encountered. From there, the trekkers return the way they came.

The scene opens with the majesty and austerity of the alpine mountains. Then, the cold sets the teeth chattering and the feet stamping with a paraphrase from Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons but which transforms into the iconic Australian song, Waltzing Matilda. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!

A railway once ran from the entry of the site to the mine itself. A tunnel was bored through a low mountain to gain access. Since then, the railway itself now removed but the path of it remaining, the tunnel has become the home of thousands of glowworms - a magical and awe-inspiring experience to witness. The piece depicts the journey along the former rail line, the experience of the glowworm tunnel, and the journey back.

Almost Home is a leisurely, languid piece for elementary school string orchestra. The nostalgic strains of this composition bring to mind an old-time church service in that little white chapel in the valley. There's a sentimentality here that touches the soul and brings about a longing for all that was good and peaceful in America's past, as well as hope for our future. The uncomplicated yet graceful strains of the melody are sure to linger in the hearts of both your musicians and your audience. ALMOST HOME is an easy to play composition written with the young musician in mind and is arranged with all instruments in First Position. It will take minimum rehearsal time to prepare and will certainly bring a pleasurable smile to all faces in the audience. The String Bass plays pizzicato throughout while the rest of the ensemble utilizes arco to bring about a soothing and dreamy feeling. All the instruments are in 1st position only. I also doubled the 2nd violin with the viola, and the cello with the bass. This was done to accomodate ensembles that might have incomplete instrumentation while having all of the parts covered. Scored in the key of G major with a modulation to C major, then to D major and finally a return to G major. I hope you enjoy my composition. Thank you!

The solo cello part is untouched from the original, and though a part is included here, any edition compatible with the original will fit. The original is of course written for cello plus two pianos, but this new edition opens up more performance possibilities. It was written with a youth ensemble in mind, so the second violin and cello parts are simpler than the first violin and viola parts. Although this may help, it should prove enjoyable for any string orchestra to perform, with either a guest solo cellist or cello leader playing the solo. Score and parts included.

The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. It also includes more bowing and a few more dynamics to help give student groups more directions. The original work can be found here: Cordolium
