My Mother had some sad news to give me. Dad was very ill. My whole life flashed before me. My parents were always 200% supportive of all my artistic endeavors. None of my success would have been possible but for my Dad and Mom. My memories of my Dad and my Mom flooded my mind like a deluge. When I heard the news about how gravely ill he was I thought to myself that so often we give thanks, honor, or show our love when it is too late. Who wants to be that person? I was finally in the unique position to show my gratitude and love to my parents in the most special way that I could - through music from my heart and soul. I got the courage to look deeply within and then I began to write what was to become the first and second songs, respectively Tears from My Eyes: Remember Your Feelings and Tears from My Eyes: Reflection and Contemplation on my Tears from My Eyes: Songs from my Soul album.You will now be able to do just the same for your loved ones with this new music. Your intermediate level to advanced students and even professional musicians should find this to be a welcomed piece to learn and master. It looks deceptively simple but the learning and challenge comes from two smaller sub-ensembles playing together in their own collective units legato con moto while playing together as a whole music ensemble Everyone will enjoy and bathe in the beautiful harmonies that will resonate when the entire music ensemble begins to listen to each while playing together as a group. Your musicians will hone their skills in playing together with just the right balance that this song requires. Your musicians will also hone their skills for subdividing and maintaining an inner beat that is in sync with your conducting because there is no percussion and the notes are freely flowing on and off the down beat yet not sounding heavily syncopated when performed. When will you know when you have achieved the right balance and flow of the music? You will know when, because you will hear it and feel it when it comes into place. But I can help you with all of this with what I have to offer you today. I share with you now the final and 5th movement to Tears from my Eyes - Onward and Upward (for String Orchestra). This particular was created and produced after the Songs from My Soul album was sent for distribution. So, this song has yet to be officially released. All five movements will be released as an album Mourning in the Rain. This 5th movement Onward and Upward has a decisive emotional resolution and conviction in its pathos. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. The haunting ?Lara?s Theme? was composed for David Lean?s epic romantic drama Doctor Zhivago (1965), and netted film composer Maurice Jarre his second Academy Award for Best Original Score (he had won previously for Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, and would win again in 1984 for A Passage to India).
This beautiful instrumental melody took on a life of its own when Paul Webster added lyrics to make it ?Somewhere, My Love? in 1966. Ray Coniff and the Ray Coniff Singers had a US Top 10 hit with it the same year, and it has remained a popular ballad ever since. A great addition to your next pops program!

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!Combine these with the set for Band when used for Full or Chamber Orchestra.

It is a dance of unbridled joy to celebrate a rich harvest of nature's bounty. In 2013, I transcribed it from my private archive of old dusty audio tapes no one had ever heard, and with the CarsonValley Sinfonia in mind, revised it for string orchestra without winds.1995 was a low period in my life. The pressure from my job in the technology industry was relentless, and personal relationships at that time sometimes brought emotional pain instead of solace and comfort. Grasping for any ray of hope to illuminate the gloom, I turned back to my original love: music.Immersing myself deeply in the process of music creation, I rediscovered not only a talent for composition, but even more importantly tapped into the creative source of uplift, joy, and energy, the source of all gifts, that is available to every sincere person. During those years, composing music was a vital lifeline. Like the powerful beam of the rescuer's flashlight guiding you toward the daylight when you are emerging from a dark cave. Like a new baby being born. Now a great many years later, life now brimming with music and friends, and having put old sorrows far behind me, music from that time of troubles still fills me with the same joy as when I composed it, and I hope it uplifts you.Harvest Dance is dedicated to my friend, composer John O'Neill, with profound appreciation for his encouragement, as well as helping me learn the practicalities of arranging for a string orchestra.

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746694). Arrangement of That's a Plenty for String Orchestra. That’s a Plenty arranged for String Orchestra, is a 1914 ragtime piano piece composed by Lew Pollack. Lyrics by Ray Gilbert (born 1912) were added decades later. A number of popular vocal versions have been recorded, but the tune remains more performed as an instrumental. The composition started out as a rag, but is nowadays played as a part of the Dixieland jazz repertoire. The song has been recorded by numerous artists, and it is considered a jazz standard. The first recording was in 1917 by Prince’s Band, and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded their rendition in 1923.Television comedian Jackie Gleason used it in his shows in the 1950s and 1960s. Among the hundreds of later recordings of this standard, particularly notable versions include: Freddy Martin and His Orchestra recorded a version of That’s A Plenty in 1950. Sheet music from the 1950 version featuring Freddy Martin on the cover has the lyrics printed inside. It was recorded by Albert Nicholas, clarinet, with The Big Chief Jazz Band in Oslo on August 29, 1955. Released on the 78 rpm record Philips P 53038. The Pollack and Gilbert song is not to be confused with a 1909 song of the same name by Henry Creamer and Bert Williams. Published by Vessela Stoyanova (A0.1201464). “Mountain Goats and Other Creatures†was Commissioned by Rachel Jayson and the Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra.It was inspired by the folk music of my native land of Bulgaria, informed by my experience as a rock musician, reimagined through the lense of my place inside of a community of like-minded artists and musicians, where I have made my real home today. The first movement - Mountain Goats - is a sort of celebration of renewal, promise, and hope. It represents the tenacious will of grass growing through the snow of early spring, the powerful longing for human connection, the warmth of the sun against your skin on a bright chilly day. It carries both the pristine optimism of youth, and the nervous energy of trying something for the first time. The second movement - Samodivi - in contrast is dark, heavy and full of passion and desire. According to Balkan myths, Samodivi are gorgeous nymphs who live in the woods and often seduce men with their beautiful song and dance. They are feared and envied at the same time. The music of the second movement represents the mysterious dark forest at night - lower strings create the moss under your feet, higher strings use extended techniques to simulate the noise of branches clicking the wind, a few soloists represent different creatures - both real and imaginary - scurry through the woods above your head. Then you hear the lone song of a Samodiva in the distance, your heart is beating hard, your steps are leading you straight towards the call against your better judgement. It is the ancient story of fear and desire, of self control and complete abandon. You, the listener, become witness to a wild dance, fire in the woods, snakes in their long blond hairs, slender bodies dressed in white clouds dancing to an imaginary beat.  Then it all ends abruptly and you left to wonder: Was it real? Did I see it? Am I safe?The third and final movement of the piece is based on a popular rhythmic folk dance in Bulgaria called Kopanitsa, while the melody creates a fugue between the different voices of the orchestra. The Kids are the little of the mountain goats - free to frolic high above tree line, above any human traces, as close to the clouds as one can get and still be touching the ground below. They are carefree, daring, and somewhat naive, yet safe under the watchful gaze of their parent. The movements ends in cascading repetitions of a musical motif in 5/8 representing the relentless passing of time or at least our perception of it.

I have composed Harmony for this remembrance concert. What I wished to do in composing this music was to reveal a more Middle Eastern tonality to my style which is derived from American folk fiddle music. As I become more and more familiar with American music in my own musical journey, I also learn that the music I like so much has many layers. It exposes mystery in its origins when one cares to peel back these layers. It is likely these Middle Eastern cultures play more of a role in American fiddling (and American music in general) than previously thought.In Harmony I use descriptive phrases printed in the score to indicate the temperament and journey of the music. Reaching Out begins the piece with its inviting and inquisitive drones. Throughout the piece there are several interpretations of the material with canonic and fugal writing. The music of Harmony is based on the same material constructed in a slow tempo in the beginning, a moderate tempo in the middle of the piece, and a fast fiddling tempo near the end. With hope in heart and music, I contribute Harmony on this painful day of remembrance. Huxhold (Who's Who Among America's Teachers- 2000, 2005, 2006) I developed this method over a 20 year period as a school orchestra teacher faced with ever diminishing classroom instructional time. My goal was to preserve and articulate the scope and sequence of the curriculum in a concise and efficient manner. This method is intended to foster music reading skills from the beginning when used in conjunction with teacher initiated rote and modeling teaching techniques. Book 2 continues in standard portrait format at 100% scale. Curriculum Scope & Sequence Prerequisite: Book 1 or 1st position (bass 1st & 3rd pos.) on A and D strings. D major, Common time. Eighth, quarter and half notes. Detáche and whole bowing. Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight, eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.

I have composed Harmony for this remembrance concert. What I wished to do in composing this music was to reveal a more Middle Eastern tonality to my style which is derived from American folk fiddle music. As I become more and more familiar with American music in my own musical journey, I also learn that the music I like so much has many layers. It exposes mystery in its origins when one cares to peel back these layers. It is likely these Middle Eastern cultures play more of a role in American fiddling (and American music in general) than previously thought.In Harmony I use descriptive phrases printed in the score to indicate the temperament and journey of the music. Reaching Out begins the piece with its inviting and inquisitive drones. Throughout the piece there are several interpretations of the material with canonic and fugal writing. The music of Harmony is based on the same material constructed in a slow tempo in the beginning, a moderate tempo in the middle of the piece, and a fast fiddling tempo near the end. With hope in heart and music, I contribute Harmony on this painful day of remembrance.
