A few years later Edgar Meyer provided the beautiful string orchestra arrangement that is contained in this score. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels but portions of the piece can be appropriate for beginners. On the companion recording Liberty!, album notes author Thomas Fleming writes, ...something remarkable was taking shape in his imagination – sounds more extraordinary than he had ever experienced. On a trip to Key West, he visited Ernest Hemingway’s house. In the sundrenched garden, music leapt into O’Connor’s mind and in a breathtaking two hours, Surrender the Sword – and its orchestral outline – was on paper. It is unquestionably one of the most passionate orchestral pieces he has ever written. In the A part, the music is busy. You can imagine voices, perhaps in Congress, perhaps in a crowd in New York or Philadelphia, wondering what is going to happen next, as General George Washington is about to resign as commander-in-chief of the American army, O’Connor says. Then comes a long melodic arc, swelling with a triumphant confidence that depicts the great military leader extending his sword to surrender it forever. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. It is a musical replication of the way the voices of liberty in 1776 began with a lonely defiant few - and then swelled to a tremendous national chorus that has resounded through the world for the next two hundred and thirty-three years. In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite to be performed at Nashville’s Summer Lights Festival. A few years later Edgar Meyer provided the beautiful string orchestra arrangement that is contained in this score. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels but portions of the piece can be appropriate for beginners.
