The following text tells the story of the music, and was included in the original publication:At night, in the depths of the Great North Woods, we sit by the blazing camp-fire and hear the legend of the Indian maiden who to save her people offers herself as a living sacrifice to the Great Spirit. On the rushing waters she embarks in her canoe, and standing erect and fearless is whirled along faster and faster until she plunges to her death over mighty Niagara. At this point in the story, the fire mysteriously leaps up, then as quickly dies down, and the thick velvety darkness of the forest again wraps us in its pall.This arrangement for string orchestra can be performed with or without double bass, but all of the other parts divide for much of the piece, so a minimum of 8 players are required. The total running time is approx. 5 minutes, making it a short but entertaining addition to any programme.This arrangement was first performed by the String Orchestra of the Lancaster Community Music Centre, Lancashire, UK.

The lyrics were written by Józef Wybicki in July 1797. The music is a based on a Polish folk tune. This arrangement can be performed by as few as six players, or as many as a large string orchestra.

Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136). Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return. The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end. Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.

This piece tells the epic story of Hades' abduction of his niece, Persephone. According to the legend, Hades came up through a crack in the ground and snatched the girl while she was playing. In the Underworld, he tried to seduce her in a variety of ways, but to no avail. Finally, Hades is said to have tricked her into staying by offering her a tempting pomegranate. As Persephone ate 6 seeds, she was to stay in the Underworld for six months each year. It is said that while Persphone is in the Underworld, the plants wither and die, and when she comes back to the surface she brings rebirth to growing things. This piece begins with playful pizzicato lines that build upon each other. These represent Persphone at play, but forebodes the dark forces that are encircling her. When the orchestra goes to arco, Persphone is being dragged into the Underworld. A mournful violin solo signifies her arrival, but this mournful theme is quickly replace by the devious seductions of Hades in the form of a humorous waltz. Finally, Hades offers the pomegranate to Persephone and she eats 6 seeds (represented by the six beats of the B major chord in measures 76 and 77). The main theme then takes over once again, modulating to F# minor to represent Hades' victory. With relentless energy, catchy ostinati and opportunities to work on shifting, pizzicato and arco throughout, this piece will not dissapoint for audiences and students alike. A FEW NOTES: 1. I'd recommend rehearsing the rhythms of recurring ostinati together- first pizzicato then arco. You may get creative and incorporate scales with these rhythms. However you do it, it'll be important that each ostinato is played with precision and confidence. 2. Have fun with the waltz section! It's meant to portray the strange, whimsical nature of Hades' attempts to woo Persephone, so the awkwardness in delivery is encouraged! 3. All ritardandos should be exaggerated for the sake of drama. 4. Encourage your drumset player to explore different ways of accompanying the orchestra- the drumset part is a blueprint, not definitive instructions. 5. Be sure to practice shifting into 2nd position for the modulation. I hope you and your students have a great time putting this epic piece together! I had a ton of fun writing it! ~Aaron Fonzi

Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522247). Shetland Sunrise is a movement from Colin Kirkpatrick's suite for elementary string orchestra entitled “Atlantic Highwayâ€. Ideal for end-of-semester concerts or any other school or college concert occasion, these tuneful and attractive pieces are bound to please audience and instrumentalists alike. The work is scored for violins 1 and 2, viola (with an identical but optional part for violin 3 in treble clef), cello, double bass and piano (or digital keyboard). The piano part is an integral part of music and therefore essential. However, it’s not especially difficult and perfectly manageable by the intermediate pianist. All the string parts can be played in first position. Pizzicato is used extensively in the double bass part and in some of the passages for the upper strings. Shetland Sunrise is in G major throughout and the time signature begins in 5/8. This might look a bit daunting to elementary places not used to seeing it but the music is a good deal easier than it appears. Because every 5/8 measure (bar) naturally falls into groups of 3 and 2 beats, the players should be told to count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, rather than one to five. They will soon pick up the irregular lilting rhythm. There are also a couple of measures of 7/8 in this piece, which should be counted as 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2. The string parts have been produced in fairly large type making them ideal for elementary players. Cues have been added where necessary.

In the first part (I Native Americans), solo celli imitates the beat of a drum over which the first violin plays a plaintive modal melody which is later layered in canonic style by the other strings. The second section (II Colonists) depicts the classical European dance style brought to the colonies with Yankee Doodle superimposed over the top. In the final section, Westward Expansion (III Pioneers) is symbolized by the square dance tune which is also posed in canonic style.
