The bowings and articulations are editorial. The arrangement uses Fauré’s four vocal lines (SATB) and the harmonium part without its running triplets. Although the triplets have been left out, the harmonies and the cantabile character remain intact and convincing. None of the string parts go beyond 1st position, but players need to be familiar with extensions and unusual accidentals. Bow control and vibrato will contribute to a mature sound and help to dramatize the forte passages. This piece is perfect for concerts, festivals, and community events that require deeply moving music. Share Fauré’s glorious French romantic harmonies with your students and their audiences.

This little suite for beginner string orchestra aims to put into practice as many of the different technical aspects of the ABRSM Grade 1 exam as possible, whilst remaining a fun piece to play! The cheerful first movement is in D major. There is some use of open string double stops and a chance for the 2nd violins to show off their left hand pizzicato, whilst the legato cello melody in the middle section explores the 1234 chromatic finger pattern. The short second movement, which is really no more than a brief interlude, is in A major, and provides the opportunity to focus on controlling slurs and legato bowing. 4th fingers instead of open Es in the 1st violins are desirable but not compulsory! Finally, the third Latin-inspired movement is a syncopation-filled exploration of the E minor natural scale. Despite never leaving Portugal, Seixas collaborated with Domenico Scarlatti, who was the chapel master of the Portuguese court. Seixas is considered the most important Portuguese baroque composer of keyboard music. Although none of his original works survived, he is credited with composing approximately 700 toccatas. Of these, only ninety-five survived in authenticated sources, along with other instrumental pieces and ten complete vocal works, including the Mass in G major. This mass is written for four soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), choir, and strings. It is divided into five parts: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. In addition to the choral sections, this piece also includes four arias, one for each soloist, two duets for soprano and alto, and a trio for soprano, alto, and tenor.

This beautiful song comes from a short collection of songs that Brahms wrote relatively late in his career.  He was working on his Violin Sonata No.2 at about the same time, and so it’s natural that piece also quotes from this work.  The song itself is a wonderful example of late Romantic harmonic and Brahms’s own lyrical melodic writing.This piece would be good for developing and refining tonal production and vibrato.  While none of the parts goes up very high, it’s not recommended for performers to stay in first position throughout the piece.  There are also opportunities to refine ensemble skills of phrasing and rubato.  Cross-curricular instruction (with English and/or German) is possible with the original song via discussion on its meaning and how Brahms tried to represent that meaning within the musical form of the work.
