Christmas is first Christ, Jesus Christ, His humble Birth in a Manger, the quiet tenderness of his Mother Mary and his Father Joseph, the surroundings of people who were prominent in their day but utterly unknown now. It is a reaction to wanting to go back to the Silent Night, the Shepherds Watching the Sheep by Night, etc. The spirit is quiet reverence for Jesus. This is arranged for solo voice (or womens' choir), flute obligato, strings (string orchestra or string quartet), and harp or piano. In other words, this is intended to minister to the quiet nobility of the true spirit of Christmas, with love and blessings.

Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136). Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return. The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end. Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.

This arrangement is loosely based on the version sung by Aretha Franklin, and starts with two soft verses in 4/4, then modulates up a tone and into 9/8, for two bigger verses with a triplet-feel quaver accompaniment. The ending can be big, or quiet, as required. This is a great selection for groups developing in compound time, and suitable for approx ABRSM grade 5 (intermediate) level and above. There are easy parts for Violin, Viola and Cello at approx Grade 2 level. The concept for this piece is to restore the voice of millions silenced by the horrific experience we now call the Holocaust, through the sounds of musical instruments that survived. One thing is clear: the genocide of the Jews was an appalling blow to the human race; one that left a permanent stain on both the perpetrators and enablers, those who stood by without uttering a word of protest. A terrible Night descended upon the world, yet, the breaking Dawn that followed was glorious, indeed. The price to save civilization in the 20th century was appallingly high. Although we must remain ever vigilant, the Jewish people today have a proud homeland—and their magnificent contributions to humanity are universally celebrated.The piece opens with the descent of the seemingly benign curtain of night. Premonitions arise but the darkness continues to descend, over and over again. Finally, chaos ensues and runs its ghastly course before dissipating. The inevitable dawn begins to break, although the curtain of night continues to threaten. Dawn is characterized by two contrasting melodies. One, a stalwart tune that marches ever forward, while the second, more questioning tune appears independently. After their separate statements, the two powerfully join forces to bring this work to a hopeful close, followed by a quiet “Amen.†This item is the score only. The parts are available on rental from the publisher.
