String Orchestra - Level 3 - SKU: A0.719773 Composed by Many. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Renaissance. Score and parts. 60 pages. Curtis Hanson #6258371. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719773). Hey string players and teachers, are you looking for something different to program or teach your students? This collection of pieces, suitable for beginning and experienced ensembles, may be what you’re looking for. For the choral musician, the secular music of the 16th and early 17th centuries comprise some of the most delightful works of early repertoire. The madrigals, lieder, and chansons in this collection are arranged for string quartet and quintet. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the instrumental musician an opportunity to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, with its varying degrees of rhythmic complexity and the juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and articulations are kept at a minimum. Traditionally, repeated sections are to be played at a softer dynamic, but nothing is written in stone. For the up-tempo piece, as many are, rhythmic cleanliness and clarity are paramount, particularly in the iconic Fa-la-la sections. Accordingly, although they may be warranted, no slurs are given. Occasional staccatos are suggested for crispness. Vocal breath marks (') above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing only, and tempos are only suggestions. As non-sacred works, they are generally not meant as 'serious' music, but rather as the music of the common people. Bottom line, they are meant to be fun, and the performer is free to interpret as desired. This collection is a companion to the arranger’s series of Renaissance Motets Arranged for Strings. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. The audio example is of the first few pieces in the collection.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1292763 Composed by Dr. John Bull. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance,Traditional. Score and Parts. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #883326. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1292763). John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Some of these composers include:William Byrd: Byrd was an English composer and one of the most influential figures in English Renaissance music. He was a contemporary of John Bull and is considered one of the greatest composers of his time. Byrd's compositions include sacred choral music, keyboard works, and consort music.Orlando Gibbons: Gibbons was an English composer and organist who lived during the same period as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, particularly his anthems and verse anthems. Gibbons' compositions are characterized by their expressive harmonies and intricate counterpoint.Thomas Tomkins: Tomkins was another English composer who was active during the same time as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, including anthems and services. Tomkins' compositions are notable for their rich harmonies and expressive melodies.Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who was highly regarded during the Renaissance period. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his variations and fantasias. Sweelinck's compositions had a significant influence on Bull and other composers of the time. These composers, along with John Bull, were influential figures in the development of Renaissance music and significantly contributed to the repertoire of keyboard and choral music during that era.

Published by Jubal's Lyre Music Publishers (A0.918910). Your String Ensemble will enjoy playing this inventive and stirring setting of the great Advent/Christmas hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel (VENI EMMANUEL). Composed in a Neo-Renaissance style, it sets all seven verses modulating into four keys while passing the melody from voice to voice before concluding with several sudden and surprising key changes that lead to a powerful cadence on the altered note of the Picardy third. It may be performed alone or with a choir. An optional keyboard part is provided so that directors can support small or young ensembles. The choral editions are published in either English or Latin. They are the first of Three Motets on Latin Christmas Hymns. The other motets in this series are settings of Of the Father’s Love Begotten (CORDE NATUS EX PARENTIS) and O Come, All Ye Faithful (ADESTE FIDELIS), which are also available in English or Latin. String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.941044 Composed by Joshua Allen. Arranged by Joshua Allen Music. Contemporary,Graduation,Renaissance,Standards. Score and parts. 18 pages. Joshua Allen Music #4716303. Published by Joshua Allen Music (A0.941044). GAUDEAMUS IGITUR, often referred to as the Gaudy, has served as a standard academic anthem in Europe and parts of America, predating Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance as a commencement processional. The original Latin-texted tune of GAUDEAMUS IGITUR is set in the key of G Major and scored for string quintet or string orchestra. Following a brief original introduction and a rendition of the original melody and harmonization in choral style, this piece presents 3 variations with the original melody. This arrangement is suitable for the average high school or an advanced middle school orchestra. If you lead an ensemble for any form of commencement, this selection will be a great addition to your performance selections. String Orchestra - Level 3 - SKU: A0.918938 By Jubal's Lyre Music. By Hans Leo Hassler. Arranged by Martin Dicke. 21st Century,Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. Score and Parts. 38 pages. Jubal's Lyre Music Publishers #6826375. Published by Jubal's Lyre Music Publishers (A0.918938). This partita for String Ensemble is based on the tune HERZLICH TUT MICH VERLANGEN by Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), which is sung to the Lenten hymn O Sacred Head, Now Wounded. Chorale settings frame this six-movement work while the inner movements employ doleful ostinatos, a quasi-canon, and a bicinium that turns into a trio at the cadences. With anguished and unconventional harmonies, the work begins fortissimo on a second inversion of an F major seventh chord and ends pianissimo eight minutes later on an A major chord. Originally composed for organ, this partita works well for strings and in the context of worship is particularly suited for Lent, Holy Week, or communion services. A downloadable performance audio mp3 is available as is a compatible edition for Woodwind Quintet. An edition for String Quartet is also available. For more music and information, visitÂ
