He wanted a piece from me for his sixth grade orchestra.The piece is in two movements (an excellent introduction to multi movement compositions) with each of the two movements being progressive, meaning the second is a bit more difficult than the first. The first movement, River Song, is an original folk song with beautiful harmonies and melodies. This is a wonderful way to introduce minor key to your ensemble. The second movement, River Dance, is a rhythmic barn dance framing a lyrical chorale section. This movement is in the more comfortable key of B-flat and serves as an excellent introduction to syncopation.

Then the melody gets passed around to the other sections as the tonal center continues to rise. Published by Taggart Press (A0.1017599). The groundbreaking Broadway Musical Showboat arguably changed the Broadway theater forever when it premiered in 1927. With music by Jerome Kern and a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the show deals with themes of racism, alcoholism, and spousal desertion at a time when social ills were not even a remote part of the typical Broadway fare. Kern's score was well received and contains many familiar songs like Ol' Man River. Make Believe, and Why do I love you?. But after Ol' Man River, It is probably the charming and poignant Bill that is most familiar to modern audiences. This arrangement gives the melody to a solo Alto Saxophone with a string accompaniment that preserves the early 20th-century feel of the original. It will work great on a pops concert, or as a lighter encore to a more serious saxophone concerto.

This is a beautiful traditional Australian Folksong which tells the story of banishment of the singer from their native Erin. The tune probably has Irish origins. This quartet version has been arranged for strings in the key of D-major. There is also an optional Violin 3 part - a sub for the Viola Part. I've arranged it for Clarinet Quartet, Flute Quartet and used this tune in my Australian Folksong Medley No. 3 for Concert Band. When the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston asked me to write a work for string orchestra, I immediately thought of the fabulous Apollon Musagète by Stravinsky. Wouldn't it be fun to write a companion piece to the Stravinsky and call it Daphne? And since the Stravinsky Apollo is a ballet, my Daphne would be one as well, although an imaginary one. Daphne is in three sections. 1. Moderato ... Apollo struts around at a party, flirting with the nymphs and then suddenly he notices Daphne. He falls in love immediately. 2. Fuga ... Unnerved by Apollo's attention, Daphne flees. Apollo chases after her. 3. Largo ... Apollo catches up to Daphne and declares his love for her. She struggled to free herself from him and calls for help. To save Daphne from Apollo, her father Ladon, the river god, transforms Daphne into a laurel tree. Curtain.Audio link.
