This soon leads into a lively folk-like Moderato Dance section with a great catchy tune and punchy rhythms. These two different sections compliment one another, adding variety and excitement as they repeat themselves half way through so that both melodies get plenty of work-out! The piece would very much suit young players, although amateurs and professionals alike can enjoy it.

The Musical was the brainchild of Phil Bennett, the head mistress of Herne Hill Primary School in London, and I had the wonderful privilege of writing the music for it in the early 1990s. The show was performed four times to parents of the children of the school and was a huge success at the time.  I decided that many of the melodies could be incorporated into my concert pieces and this piece is one such example. It can be enjoyed by both professionals and students alike. It is rhythmic and tuneful, with  a Russian folk song flavour.There are two arrangements available:No. 1 – School arrangement:  for Violins 1, 2 and 3, cellos 1 and 2 No. 2 – Standard:  for Violins 1 and 2, viola, cello and Double Bass.

ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSWhen I was a young child and I would ask my mother for something she would often, in the midst of all her busy jobs, say to me, “Oh, give me a minuet!â€, meaning jokingly a minute, of course, before she could tend to my wishes.  This meant that I grew up believing that a minuet and a minute meant the same thing and could be equally interchanged. You can then imagine my amazement and amusement at around 13/14 years of age when I discovered through my music studies that a minuet was in fact a type of musical form and dance! Therefore, it went without saying that at some point in my music writing life I just HAD to write my Mum a minuet! So, here is the minuet she so often unwittingly asked me for throughout our lives! She attended the premiere of the Flute, violin and piano arrangement in Bolton, UK, and was highly amused (and not a little chuffed) by the story behind the piece!Naturally, the piece is dedicated to my mother, Margaret (Pearl) Denny, and was finally written in June 2015 for Gary Woolf and the Banda Di Musica in Germany.Its duration is about 7/8 minutes long and it is intended for junior strings. Violins 1 and 2 are of moderate difficulty, while the Violin 3/violas, cellos/basses are simpler.There is a violin solo throughout (moderate difficulty), to be played by the Leader, but is not a concerto-style solo, but rather one that weaves in and out of the texture throughout the piece.The piece is in a minuet and Trio style and is light, tuneful and fun. There are 3 arrangements available:No.1 – School Arrangement: Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No.2 – Standard Arrangement: Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos, Double bassesNo.3 – Violin, flute and piano.  This arrangement is of a more advanced standard than the string orchestra arrangements and would suit players of approximately grade 7 upwards.

Its 2 melodies span 36 years. The first tune came to me when I was 8 years old and on holiday in the Co.Donegal town of Buncrana, west Ireland. Back then there was a small shop on Buncrana’s high street that sold everything from milk to DIY tools. And the name of the shop was “John Thinn And Sonâ€. I thought this was an awesome name and I remember the shop owner, the real Mr. Thinn, being a lovely kindly, rather shy and gentle man. And this inspired my childhood mind’s character of Mr.Thinn the magic-toy maker.  The 2nd theme arrived in September 2011 as soon as I had decided that Mr.Thinn’s first tune had waited long enough and now needed to find a permanent home. Once again writing for the wonderful Banda di musica has given me a unique chance to release an old and very special melody that has lain neglected and home-less for over 3 decades. The resulting piece is light hearted, fun and in a simple ABA form.There are 2 arrangements;No. 1 – School Arrangement ; Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No. 2 – Standard Arrangement ; Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double BassThere are a few violin and cello solos throughout which are to be played by the section leaders. The cello solo remains the same apart from the harmonics, which have been transferred as ordinary high notes to a solo violin. This will make the piece much more approachable for younger players.There are two Arrangements; School Arrangement –  Violins 1, 2 and 3 and Cellos 1 and 2. The cello solo is played by the lead cellist and is written on the Cello 1 part.Standard Arrangement – Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. Again, the cello solo is played by the lead cellist.

Originally written for the Young String Programme at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester UK, this fun Blues piece has been tried and tested on young string players. Technical elements include low 2nd fingers, retakes, and D.S al Coda markings.The arrangement includes an open string part suitable for Violin, Viola and Cello provided as both notation and graphic rhythm score with colour strings colours / string letter names.
