Circle Dance (America)Folk Fantasies (2013) for solo violin, percussion, and string orchestra is a concert piece inspiredby folk traditions. Although this work draws upon folk music styles, it does not quote or use anyactual folk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composingan “original folk tune†within that musical style. Each movement of the work is then a simplearrangement in my own musical style of my original tunes. The formal and harmonic languageof the work is very simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. The middlesections contain settings of the basic melody—first presented over a bagpipe-like drone (withinterjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with a simplemelody in the Nigerian/Yoruba folk style. As the movement progresses, the violin plays the roleof a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodies and textures over the basicrefrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant—alluding to the songs of the Shakers. Abasic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrasting excursions. The set contains the score and solo part only. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part. The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work. This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination. On Jordan's Stormy Banks, the American hymn tune, PROMISED LAND, dates back to the early 1800's. It is originally found in a hymnal that was used in the singing schools that were prevalent throughout the southern United States. This arrangement has a fiddle-tune like flavor and uses some open string double stops in an opening motif, hinting at its roots in the folk song tradition. The melody part is can be played in first position entirely. Your players are sure to have fun with the double-stops, finger slides, sounded glissandos and rhythmic patterns that are sure to have you tapping your toe.

Harald Genzmer has done a lot for the work with young musicians, and many a string player can recall school orchestra days when Sinfonietta was on the programme quite often. But the probably best-known pupil of Hindemith has written far more of such educational music: all in all, 3 sinfoniettas, apart from collections of simple settings like the eleven Character Pieces for String Orchestra from 1998. They are expressive, entirely songlike miniatures, livened up by two rousing pieces and a pizzicato setting. The pieces can either be played separately or put together into little suites and are ideally suited for school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And despite all educational intentions: It is enjoyable and lively music which is fun to play.
