String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491758 By Keith Terrett. By Roy Williamson. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Multicultural,World. 10 pages. Keith Terrett #1068437. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1491758). As of February 2024, the Scottish Government have not yet formally adopted an official national anthem of Scotland, despite having the legal competence in order to do so. ] During a meeting of the Enterprise and Culture Committee on 9 May 2006 in the Scottish Parliament, MSP Michael Matheson raised the question about the status of Scotland's national anthem, citing during the recent Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, there was some debate about a Scottish national anthem, largely because a number of songs were being used as our national anthem. However, in recent discussions on the matter, no consensus was reached, other than on the point that we should have a national anthem. At that time, there was suggestions that the incumbent First Minister of Scotland Jack McConnell had claimed that a debate on an official national anthem for Scotland should take place to address the issue.MSP Murdo Fraser expressed concerns over the three most popular candidates for an official national anthem of Scotland – Flower of Scotland, Scotland the Brave and Highland Cathedral. In his speech to the committee, he claimed Flower of Scotland is inappropriate because some of the sentiments that are expressed in it are jingoistic and anti-English; Scotland the Brave is inappropriate because, although it is a good tune, it does not have words that match the upbeat nature of the music; and Highland Cathedral is a good tune, but it has no words at all.

Han-Ki Kim #4628641. Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.511709). This music is arranged for Church concert and also for Educational purpose. I -as a Violinist and arranger of I Musici - tried to make use of functional structure of stringed instrument. So, some passage looks complicated can be played easily and shown Bowing sign and Fingering will be very helpful to player. And, in my work, can find well balanced between Theory and Musical Experience. Optional Violin 3 - instead of Viola part - part is inculded.Han-Ki Kim Arranger, Violinist. He earned his Master's degree from the Michigan State University (Majored in Violin). Kim has formerly been concertmaster of Daegu City Sym. Orchestra as well as for the Michigan State University Orchestra. He was an advising professor for the Czech Republic's Dobřichovice International Music Camp, and now Korean Suzuki Association Music Camp. String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813844 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 31 pages. Regis Bookshar #6537751. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813844). Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Db) (String Orchestra) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (23 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners. The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a String Orchestra. Parts included with the purchase are a 1st Violin, a 2nd Violin, a 3rd Violin, a 1st Viola, a 2nd Viola, a 1st Violon.

You can purchase the score and one set of parts at https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20826942 . An accompaniment track is available at https://youtu.be/SlkbjfKBdjc . So you can play this with the accompaniment and any combination of parts. If there are no violists, or if the cello part is too hard for your students, you can play the songs with the accompaniment, and it will sound fine. In fact, I have performed this piece with the violin open string parts only, along with the accompaniment. Please do not make copies of this. I know your project is underbudgeted and you are underpaid, and the photocopier is right down the hall. But this is my livelihood. So please, please, please, buy as many copies as you need. It's really cheap! This is one of the Open String Symphony series of music for string players of mixed skill levels. You can see all the books of the series at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/search?Ntt=Open+String+Symphony These pieces are part of a more complete program for teaching strings in classes. You can read the entire first-year program in the books Playing Together Student Workbook and Playing Together: Teacher's Guide, both available on Amazon: Teacher's Guide: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Together-Teachers-Guide-teaching/dp/1534974598 Student Workbook: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Together-Student-Workbook-2/dp/1535336617 If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements.
